NIs 2012 nightmare

Hi there,

as a newbie I don't know where this goes, and please remember that I'm computer illerterate.

Last year I purchased a new Packard Bell home computer, they installed Norton 360; the subscription was on the last day when I went to install NIS 2012, shop purchased CD.

I followed the instructions on the leaflet, and was happily proceeding, the message about unistalling Norton 360, I agreed, a short while later it auto shut down and rebooted, and then nothing. I checked my computer and my CD drive was not showing, I looked at the device manager which showed a conflict. It was telling me that there was a driver error, so I followed tne instructions and tried to update the driver but was informed that it was installed correctly.I tried rebooting but to my horror I had lost most of my programs

at this point I shut down and contacted a friend. His livelihood is building and repairing computers, his 1st comment was that Norton is a nightmare, and should be avoided. However, it was too late, he came to my rescue and spent three hours having to try and rescue my stuff, fortunately there was a mirror image to go to, but then the time was taken to update all my information. I was  not impressed, and refused to try again installing NIS 2012, and there was no way it was going on my laptop. Since then I have spoken to several people who all expressed difficulties, and that it was best to un install the early version, and then it was straight forward. It does not say anything about doing that in the instructions, so I'll be going back to the shop for a refund, hopefully that will be successfull and then the end of this nightmare. Thank you.

Re: NIs 2012 nightmare

When uninstalling any antivirus or firewall/AV combo, it is always best to use the manufacturer's removal tool. For Norton products it is https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?version=current&product=Norton...

Then reboot at least twice before installing any other substitue product.

Re: NIs 2012 nightmare

Do I have to use the Norton Removal Tool when installing a new release of NIS when a new version comes next year, I already am using NIS2012 now... or can I just install over the NIS2012 when NIS2013 comes out ?!

And why the hell is there such a tool, Norton removal Tool, why isn't uninstall previous AV enough ?!

Hi,

You should be able to install NIS2013 over NIS2012 without any problem. If your specific configuration doesn't like that idea then try after doing a control panel uninstall of NIS2012. You will have to do a bit more it you change products within the Norton line.

Every security software developer does things in their own way. No one of them has a universal uninstall tool. This is why each of the better developers provides a removal tool for their product. After running it and rebooting you should be able to install any other vendors product without a problem. Yes, there are exceptions.
Hope this helps

Re: NIs 2012 nightmare

I personally have had no problems upgrading to the next incremental release of NAV or NIS; i.e 2011 to 2012 for example.

The OP was uninstalling Norton 360 and then attempting a NIS 2011 fresh install. Those are two different products.

Because any error or problem encountered is the ubiquitous support advice to uninstall and reinstall, the net effect is a clean install.  :smileywink:

Re: NIs 2012 nightmare

Thanks for the replies. It now appears that it is favourable to uninstall the previous version, why is there no mention of this in the instructions? Why when NIS 2012 requests to do this does it screw up your pc. I did not want the 'clean install' or the waste of time, loss of use of pc, or the hefty drink for my mate's time.

Hi,

Just a couple of notes to add to all of the above.

Most installations will allow the new version to be installed over the old version - it MUST be the same product.

What will be the best advice for the upgrade from NIS2012 to NIS2013 is not known at this time. Come back when that version is released and we will be able to provide you with the latest and best available. Til then
