NORTON internet Security 2011 deleted ALL C:Files

hi

I just thought I successfully installed Norton 2011 Internet security on my Dell 1500 Inspiron with Vista.  I did a restart and my desktop wallpaper was changed to Windows Vista wallpaper default and every single file and program was wiped. It was like an unwanted complete OS re-install.

Before raping my other two PC's,  could someone please tell me what caused this and what's the work-around?

thanks!

Jim

Hello jimmyfro5

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum

Can you please tell us where NIS 2011 was purchased? Was the computer already infected when you installed NIS 2011? What was the previous security program and how was that removed.? I am sorry to hear about your problem.

Re: NORTON internet Security 2011 deleted ALL C:Files

Hi

I got a 3 install box from ebay power seller.
To my knowledge, my laptop was not infected.
I currently have Norton AntiVirus 2011 installed, I used Control Panel Programs page to remove it prior to
attempted Norton IS 2011 install.

Thanks

Jim

Re: NORTON internet Security 2011 deleted ALL C:Files

Hello Jimmy

It is very dangerous to buy software that requires a key from places like eBay. It is very possible that the product that you bought was not new and there is always the question of where the seller purchased it also. It is possible that the boxed version was not one that came from Norton. The key may have been used already also and that isn't always known immediately either.

Please see your other thread to see how the new one should be installed. Thanks.

In what way would that wipe the c drive clean, even if the key wasn't valid?

Hello Bombastus

I was just trying to point out that the purchased box from eBay may not have been an authentic Norton product. I'm not saying this is the case, but it is possible that the boxed version contained something else than NIS 2011.

Hi jimmyfro5,

It sounds like Windows might have booted into a different account, possibly a temporary profile.  Did you get any Windows alerts about not being able to load your profile?

Re: NORTON internet Security 2011 deleted ALL C:Files

Hi Jim

Sorry to hear of your major issue after your install recently....

As floplot says.......Quote [It is very dangerous to buy software that requires a key from places like eBay. It is very possible that the product that you bought was not new and there is always the question of where the seller purchased it also}

I have seen an almost identical problem on a friends PC who was having a similar issue to yourself......(he bought the software from a Computer Fair in what was supposed to be genuine retail packaging ) ...but there were other aspects that looked a bit suspect and the " key details" seemed a little suspect too !

His drive wasn't "wiped" ...but his file structure was compromised to the extent that it was almost irrepairable and it took some time to resolve the matter via some careful "regedit" processes !

No doubt someone will correct me if I am wrong here....but the install issue you experienced involved some pretty drastic affects to your system core , that I would consider very unlikely with a totally genuine  product !

Seeing as Norton Internet Security 2011 is available for just under £30 at High Street  retail outlets...I myself wouldn't  risk my security and online protection to anything less than a proven  "bona fide " product package!

You say you used "Control Panel " to remove your previous software .I am wondering if there is a possibility that there may have been some deep seated "registry hooks" left behind that have caused a conflict and the subsequent problem you have encountered !

I'm not sure if there is a safe "work around" procedure , and a bit more info might be needed before anything like a safe solution can be suggested ...Is there any strange behaviour that you can recall prior to your install of the new software that you can recall...Sometimes ..even what seems an insignificant event that is "out of the norm " can be a pointer to a possible solution ..Is there anthing you can recall that may have happened that seemed unusual ..It may just give someone here a clue as to which way to approach this ........

Re: NORTON internet Security 2011 deleted ALL C:Files

Hi jimmyfro5

You are running Vista, was it current at the time you installed Norton ?

Did you have another security program running when you installed Norton?

From the sounds of the installation result I'm almost thinking that the code on the CD wasn't Norton - regardless of what the face of it said.

Under no circumstances would I install software from this CD on anything else

Looking forward to your responses to the other questions asked
