NUA.exe version 2.0.0.46

[ Edited ]

NIS2010 17.8.0.5

Vista Home premium 32 bit with Vista SP2

If I remember correctly, NUA.exe is the "updating" process to notify users that there is a newer version of  their product (in thiscase NIS 2011) (isn't NUA.exe what brings up the symantec pop up that says there is a newer version of the product?)

Found NUA.exe in C:\ProgramData\Norton

It is signed by symantec and appearantly was added to my computer  1/4/11

Not worried about this item

BUT

Not noticing I thought it was a folder, so I clicked to open it. Needless to say it is NOT a folder but a file. Now nothing appeared to happen when I clicked on it (Could be because I was logged on through a vista  limited user account)

However, while nothing opened when I clicked on the file, a text document appeared to be created

"telemetry"

This is what the document says (I x'd out some parts so that if it were malicious, nobody could click on it):

stats.qalabs.symantec.com/n/xxmodule=9101&language=09.    xxxxxxxx=Norton Update Agent&version=2.0.0.46&OS=6.0.6002.2.0.0&MID={46776eaf-f604-4dad-a32b-3425c5a59bad}&n=XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX&s=1&m=0&o=0&k=0&p=0&q=0&r=0&error=15&l=0&a=Norton Internet Security&b=17.8.0.5&c=eng-USA&f=20032477&g=20032878&h=7D6Y9VRXXXXXXi=Retail&j=1

stats.norton.com/n/p?module=9101&language      =XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXNorton Update Agent&version=2.0.0.46&OS=6.0.6002.2.0.0&MID={46776eaf-f604-4dad-a32b-3425c5a59bad}&n=XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX=0&error=15&l=0&a=Norton Internet Security&b=17.8.0.5&c=eng-USA&f=20032477&g=20032878&h=7D6Y9VRPMKXF&i=Retail&j=1

Nothing appears to be wrong

So my main questions here are

1. What is this document tryting to say? Does the "=1" at the end mean that the NUA.exe attempted to run but failed?

2. Did I mess up my NIS 2010 by clicking on the NUA.exe?

3. And Lord I hope not, but does this mean that I need to reinstall NIS  to fix anything that I may have messed up? (I really don't want to do that but would if necessary)

Thanks all

Can't be sure . Perhaps someone from Symantec can explain this.

No way to break Norton this way . I don't think you should worry about this.I don't think reinstalling Norton is necessary.

By the way , I can't find such exe on my computer - NUA.exe

I run  NIS 2011 (18.5) , too . Could you explain where exactly you have this executable , where it is located ?

Re: NUA.exe version 2.0.0.46

NUA.exe is on the machine because Calls is still on 2010 version.  It will download the 2011 version and ask him if he wants to update to 2011.  Nothing you do to it will affect the running of NIS.

Re: NUA.exe version 2.0.0.46

Hi Calls,

As I mentioned in the other thread you saw you can disable NUA from running if you wish.

Re: NUA.exe version 2.0.0.46

As long as its nothing important, I'll let it be.

Now I am unclear about 1 thing. Does NUA.exe just inform you of an updated version of your product? Or does it actually start downloading the new product without one's permission?

Please , excuse me because it seems I am unaware of your situation but is there a reason you don't want version 2011 ?

Re: NUA.exe version 2.0.0.46

Hi Calls

NUA will download the new product and then asks for permission to install.

See this post.

Best wishes.

Re: NUA.exe version 2.0.0.46

[ Edited ]

I don't want to post on the other posts about NUA.exe, because I have done that before and it confuses everyone. So I'll keep my questions here on my post

I like appearantly many others, received NUA.exe sometime around the first of 2011.

So if I understand correctly-

NUA.exe will download NIS 2011 to my computer. Then give me a pop up message asking if I want to install. But initailly I don't have the option to just click NO?

I have to click remind me later?

Then get another pop up asking me again if I want to install and then at that time decline?

Then if I decline it removes the downloaded(but uninstalled) NIS 2011 AND NUA.exe?

now at this time NUA.exe is sitting in C:\ProgramData\Norton

I do not show it in task manager.

I do not see it in the add/remove programs function of Vista

so how long before it gets installed and then starts to force the download?
