Hi all,
I have to help a friend who lives in Milan, to install NIS 2012 on a PC where NIS 2011 is already installed and I have to do it by phone since he lives about 500 miles from where I live.
Can someone tell me if it is better to do it without uninstall the old version, just updating, or it is better to first uninstall the old version?
Specs: - Win Vista sp2 on an HP Desktop 1 n half year old
- 4 GB ram
- Intel core 2 Quad @ 2.66 HZ
- HDD 1 terabyte
- 1GB video card.
Usually I have no problem to do it alone, but saw the problems that have occurred to some users by installing NIS12, I have a bit of fear. So I wouldn't create problems at my friend to which I have recommended the type of PC and the security suite that is NIS11 last year and NIS12 now.
Many Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
Sandro

Hi Sandro,
You can ask your friend to overinstall NIS2012 over NIS2011. The latest NIS2012 is available at www.norton.com/nis12
But before doing that, ask him to take a backup of Identity safe data in DAT from Identity safe settings the reason being taking a backup always helps if something fails in future. Once the backup is ready ask him to overinstall NIS2012 or this can be done by just updating through the current product.
Apart from this there is no need for any other precautionary steps to be done for NIS2012 installation. Need not uninstall NIS 2011 just update or overinstall NIS2012.

Actually, in NIS 2011, that would be .NPM rather than DAT. Go into Identity Safe settings and use the Backup option to save a copy of the IDS contents - NIS 2011 only offers .NPM, which can still be used to restore to NIS 2012 if it becomes necessary.

Hi SoJ,
Yup, rite it should be in NPM format rather than DAT format.
Thanks for pointing that.

Hello Sandro
Is your friend having any problems with NIS 2011 now? If there are no problems, then an over the top installation is ok. Will he be installing an English version of NIS or will it be the Italian version? The link given by prasanna is the link for the English version. If you are going to use a different language than English, then I different link would have to be given. Thanks.
Success always occurs in private and failure in full view.

Thank you all for your suggestions.
Thank you all for your suggestions.
Floplot has guessed that I need the link to the Italian version.
Also I can confirm that my friend has never had problems with the previous version.
I will first back up all data and then I overinstall NIS 2012.
I am waiting to receive the link for the Italian version. Thanks everyone, I will certainly return here to confirm that everything is gone for the better.

One way to get the latest version with the minimum complication, if the friend has accesson the internet to the MyNortonAccount used to activate the installation is just to log into that and click on the Download button alongside the entry for that copy of NIS 2011 -- that downloads the latest verstion already activated and so should be the correct languge version also.
The first thing the current versions do is uninstall the version it finds and then installs the new version. It is supposed to save settings and the Identiy Safe data but it's never a good idea to rely on that so back that up as recommended.
After installationis complete it is a good idea to run live update manually a few times with a restart in between until it say you are fully uptodate -- that brings down last minute defintions and fixes.
As a final check suggest clicking on Support / About and telling you the Version number which should be 19.n.n.nn where n is a number.

Hi Prasanna
I just finished to install NIS12.
I did several checks and everything seems to work perfectly.
Remain to be solved some issues mentioned on the List Known issues with NIS 19.1"
Thanks a lot for your cooperation.
