I installed NIS 2011 today, after first removing Avira Premium Security Suite. At first all seemed fine, but whenever I try to click on anything in the Network Security Map I get the windows message "Symantec Service Framework stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." I then have to reboot to get things back to normal. Sometimes I get the message "Windows wireless LAN 802.11 Extensibility Framework stopped working and was closed" when I reboot 

I have tried uninstalling, using the Norton removal tool, and reinstalling. It makes no difference.

I have seen a similar problem reported, but that was NIS 2009, and no solution was given. Any ideas?

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit) on an Acer Aspire 7720, connected via wired LAN, using a Belkin N+ router. I am not connected to a wireless network.

I am having the same issue with xp service pack 3. In my case it is an issue with roboform.  With roboform (either desktop or 2go) installed, clicking in the network security map crashes Norton. If I don't try to go into the network map Norton seems to be working. Uninstall Roboform and the Network Security Map works OK,(after reboot to start NIS again)

Welcome to the Norton Community.

What SP do you have with Windows Vista? Also what version(s) of .NET framework do you have installed? You can find the information on .NET framework from Control Panel > Unintall a program. Then search through the list. Please make note of the exact versions of .NET framework as there might be more than one entry/version.

Did you also run a removal tool to ensure all remnants of Avira were removed properly?

You can also use 'msconfig' to see if there is any conflicting software which might be causing this. Please see this post.

If one has Roboform 7 installed, then clicking to edit the Network Security Map in NIS2011 (or Norton 360 V5) causes a crash.  If one kills the task robotaskbariocon.exe, then the Network Security Map works just fine.  It isn't a problem with a virus.  It isn't a problem with a dll.  It isn't a problem with a file per se.  It is a compatibility problem with that one task.

I can report this to Symantec but I do want to make sure first that it is understood that Roboform has distinct overlap with NIS in terms of functionality since both provide password manager and form filling features.

So before we go down that path, have either of you tried completely disabling Identity Safe in NIS? You can do this from Settings > Web Settings > Identity Safe and set to OFF. If either or both of you have not yet tried this, please do so and let me know if the problem with Network Security Map still exists.

Given that Roboform and NIS had very distinct and overlapping functionality it is not wholly surprising to me that there might be a compatibility issue between them.

Just out of curiousity, is there a reason why you choose Roboform instead of ID Safe?

Roboform as a large number of advantages over the Norton offering.  For me, the key deciding features are:

1. Sync - I use the Roboform Anywhere product, so my laptop, phone and workstations all share the same login information.  A change to a password done on one computer automatically updates all the others. 

2. Ability to choose which credit card to use to fill in purchase information.  When presented with a credit card information screen, I can readily choose which credit card to use to enter the information.

3.  Automatic strong password generation.  I can press a button, have Roboform generate a strong password, fill it in, and save it.

4. Firefox compatibility.  Had I relied on the Norton product, I would have had a big problem after updating to Firefox 4.0.  Yes, I know the patch is out now.  But during the time it wasn't....

Overall, the Roboform product is much more mature and useable than the Norton product.  That said, I look forward to seeing improvements in the Norton product, and would love to kill off Roboform.  I use Norton 360 for protection on my Windows machines - and that product has now gotten good enough for backups that I have killed of iDrive.

Regarding the crashes:  they occur on my laptop running 32-bit Windows 7 professional.  They do not occur on my workstations running 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate.

Thanks for the update. Please do try completely turning OFF ID Safe and see if this makes a difference. This at least should stop the overlapping functionality between the two products and with any luck, the crash as well.

Completely disabled Identity Safe.  Crash still occurs if the roboform task is running.  Kill the roboform task, no crash.

I have a feeling (no rational reason) that it's got nothing to do with Identity Safe, but with the new feature in Roboform 7 that allows it to pop up and fill in entries in Windows applications now....(I have that feature disabled, but I'll bet the DLL still hooks...)

Hi Neil,

I went ahead and installed Roboform and I can reproduce the crash when pulling up the Netwok Security map in NIS.

You can also prevent the crash by closing down Roboform completely or disabling the add-ons through IE and then restarting.

I will go ahead and report this issue to Symantec and let you know when I have heard anything back.
