Norton Anti-Virus 2009 and MS Project

This may have been covered elsewhere, but I took a look and didn't see it mentioned.

If you are using MS Office and ask Norton to scan office files while opening them, it will cause Microsoft Project to "stop working" in Vista parlance. Vista eventually issues a message saying that the file you're trying to open can't be found. I'm running Vista Home 64 bit with all updates for both it and Norton products installed. Anti-virus works fine with other office files, like Excel and Word, so it seems to affect only MS Project files. It took me a while to figure this one out as I was installing a trial version of MS Project and thought it was at fault. The light bulb finally went on when I noticed the "Requesting Virus Scan" at the bottom left of the Project screen just before it crashes. Sure enough, when I disabled this feature, Project works just fine.

You can enable or disable this feature by clicking on Norton Protection Center Options, selecting Internet Security from the drop down list, then clicking on Real-Time Protection on the General Options screen.

Which version of Project are you using?

I have no problems with 2007 pro on XP 32 bit.... I know it's not the same, but maybe can check something.

Do you have any special makros, or any special element in it?

And which NAV version (16.?) are you using. You can check the version number on the main panel by clicking on Help and Support -> About.

Re: Norton Anti-Virus 2009 and MS Project

I'm using Project Pro 2007 with Vista 64 bit and don't use macros. I actually have a trial version which I'm evaluating. My Norton Internet Security version is 15.0.0.60 which I just bought a couple of months ago.

That's NIS2008. You can download the 2009 version by clicking here. And it's free of charge (you buy a subscription for updates, and virus defs... etc, not the program, so any updated version is always free)!

If you use localized versions, click on this link, it should redirect you to the localized page (it checks the localization of your browser).

Edit: check the same thing in 2009, and if it's there again, and it's possible, please send us on of these files, and we can check it too, but I hope the 2009 upgrade solves your problem.

Re: Norton Anti-Virus 2009 and MS Project

Thanks for the tip and link. Versions of Norton software are very confusing. I purchased, downloaded, and installed a file called Norton Internet Security 2009 just a few weeks ago, which includes Anti-Virus plus some other things. I run Liveupdate every day at startup, so everything is up-to-date. As far as I can tell, Anti-Virus should be current based on everything I've done. The version number I posted is from Help under Internet Security.

Regardless, I'll take a look at the link you provided. I appreciate your help.

If your version is 15 then you did not buy NIS 2009. You bought NIS 2008. Where did you buy it from?

NIS 2009 = 16

NIS 2008 = 15

NIS 2007 = 14

NIS 2006 = 13

Update:

I tried downloading and installing Anti-Virus 2009, but got an error message saying that it won't work unless I uninstall Norton Internet Security.

That's very interesting. I bought it directly from Symantec's web site. I'll try their upgrade feature to see if there's a newer version of Internet Security.

In the link I posted before, choose Norton Internet Security and the version 2008. Then you can download Norton Internet Security 2009.

Before the install write down your product key, and save identity safe settings (if you use it), and then install 2009.

By the way antivirus and internet security are different products. NIS contains the antivirus + firewall and e-mail scanning and more (ie. the add-on pack's features). When you have Norton Internet Security you must download the Internet Security update, not the AntiVirus update. ;)

I think that was 12..... 13 is unfortunately, and nobody creates a version number with it in the USA. Like the new MS Office will be version 14 instead of 13, and it was the same with the latest Ghost version too. :D :D The same with skyscrapers too...

But I do not know why....
