Hi,

I hope that someone will be able to help me.  I have four issues that I need help with.

1.  I recently started using Norton Internet Security 2010, however I think there is a problem because every time I scan my computer, the 'results' screen tells me there are 'no security issues' (or words to that effect).  This can't be the case because I have the same program on another (newer) computer in the house and Norton ALWAYS picks up cookies that need to be deleted, however on the 'other, older' computer it NEVER picks up cookies.  I've checked the settings on the suspect computer (the one that doesn't detect cookies during a Norton scan) and the settings definitely state that it should ask me whether it should delete cookies if they are detected.

2.  A message appears each day saying that a full system scan (or words to that effect) is occurring, however when I checked the Norton info, it appears that a full system scan has not occurred for about a month!  I have tried to run a full system scan by clicking on the appropriate button myself, however the scan ran for over 3 hours last time and I gave up and turned it off. 

3.  I am quite concerned because I started using Norton Internet Security 2010 recently because the other internet security program I was using didn't pick up cookies and didn't seem to be working properly.  I'm concerned because it didn't pick up a trojan that was on my computer and I had to use an alternative program to detect and delete the trojan. 

4.  What can I do to get rid of these problems & what might be wrong?    What can I do to get Norton Internet Security 2010 to work properly on my computer?   How can I do a 'clean uninstall' of Norton Internet Security 2010 and reinstall it?

I just re-read my message and part of it was a bit unclear.  It was NIS 2010 that didn't pick up the trojan.  I had to use a different program and it picked up the trojan, but NIS 2010 didn't so I think something is amiss.  Nasty something or other on my computer stopping things from working properly???  I don't know??  Please help

And uninstall and re-install is fast and easy.

Also, you can upgrade to the new and improved NIS 2011 for free. You can use the same product key.

It can be installed on top of NIS 2010, but since you suspect something wrong with the installation of NIS 2010, I would suggest a complete removal and re-install.

This is most thoroughly accomplished by using the Norton Removal Tool. It can be found here:

Note that running the Norton Removal Tool will remove all Norton products from your system, in case you have any other installed as well.

Download it, run it, and reboot when prompted. I'd suggest running it again after that, to get rid of any remains that might have been locked by the program the first time.

Then install NIS 2011 and apply your product key. Run Live Update until you get no more updates.

Can you please tell us what operating system and service pack and whether it is 32 or 64 bit please? What was your previous security program and how was it removed? It is necessary to use a removal tool from the other company to completely remove the other security program.

Having installed NIS 2010 on a computer which didn't have the other security program properly removed could have affected the proper installation and functioning of the Norton product. Also installing it on an already infected can affect the installation and functioning of the program

The lack of finding tracking cookies in itself is not a security risk.

If you have a current subscription, you are entitled to a free upgrade to NIS 2011.

You can follow this kb to install it on the computer where you are not having problems over the top of NIS 2010

I would first use the removal tool from the other company and run that a couple of times.

disconnect from the net

run the removal tool 2 times which will remove all Norton products with a reboot after each run.

run the install of Nis 2011 and connect back to the net when it wants to.

Concerning the Tracking Cookies, check the Privacy settings in your browser.  If it is configured to delete cookies everytime you close the browser, there will be no cookies kept for Norton to find.

Plus, cookies are no security threats, nothing to worry about. Some consider them a privacy issue, but they are not harmful in themselves and pose no security risk for your computer.

To clear cookies from IE 8 go to tools-->delete browsing history. Make sure you have the options checked as in the following picture:

After that click on delete.
