Norton Internet Security 2004 - Renewal Date Not Installed problem

[ Edited ]

Problem started = Around July 20, 2009

Subscription Expiration Date = November 4, 2009

Around July 20, 2009 of this year I noticed my subscription seemed to have stopped working. And when I tried Live Update that 4 items in the list of items that it checks for updates for me were no longer being updated. And as the title to the topic says when I checked the Renewal Status it said Not Installed even thou on the right side it says my subscription is current.

After the usual virus and spyware checks and scandisk and defragging nothing fixed it. So I figured something must have been corrupted or screwed up. So on the Norton help site I found this,

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/custserv.nsf/docid/2006032017044446?Open&docid=2004020913084846...

Is this the right answer I think it is, but it says to use some Norton Removal Tool instead of Add and Remove Programs. Does the Norton one remove more then then just removing it from the Control Panel?

I mean I can't update my virus definitions atm so I'm kind of cautious of downloading anything as well as past experiences with Dell when after I downloaded a small program so the tech guy could help diagnosis my computers problem he didn't give me any word of how to then uninstall the program I had to install after he was done.

How long will NIS 2004 be supported as well? Also I know some people might say I should upgrade I know but I like the ad-blocker in 2004 and I won't upgrade until I know the Norton product I upgrade tool still has Ad-Blocker in it. It's been a great product so that's why I don't want to change to another company either.

Re: Norton Internet Security 2004 - Renewal Date Not Installed problem

Norton installs at various locations in registry, doing uninstall from control panel doesn't fully remove all reg entries, moreover settings are also not removed.

On the other hand norton removal tool specializes in removing all norton products from all locations leaving ur key behind only.

Its always suggested to use NRT bcoz it removes norton even if there is some corruption is there, whereas control panel uninstalls freezes during corrption leaving system very unstable.

NRT is better use it and try reinstalling ur product, it will be fine :)

Hi Baowoulf,

You have a very old version of Norton Internet Security. Nowadays, browsers have their own in-built ad-blockers and (free) add-ons to block scripts, flash banners etc.

NIS 2004 is no match for today's threat landscape. I strongy recommend you to purchase and install NIS 2010. Since you are a user of NIS 2004, you cannot use your subscription to update to NIS 2010. Also, you can no longer, to my knowledge, obtain technical support for 2004, while with the latest Norton product, you always have access to technical support and resources.

Considering that you are refusing to upgrade to the latest version of NIS simply because of an ad-blocker - which has been part of browsers like IE and Firefox for quite some time now - I think that you are exposing yourself and your computer to a lot of risks.

If you decide to purchase NIS 2010, then I recommend that you uninstall NIS 2004 with the removal tool, since the two versions are so far apart in years and engines.

Before upgrading your antivirus software, please make sure that your computer fulfils the minimum system requirements for the installation of NIS 2010. Please read the system requirements for NIS 2010 at the link below and click on "System Requirements":

http://www.symantec.com/norton/internet-security

If your system specifications are fine, then you can purchase NIS 2010, if you are located in the US, over here:

http://www.symantec.com/norton/internet-security

If you prefer a boxed version, you can order it from amazon or simply go to a retail store.

To uninstall NIS 2004 and install NIS 2010 with the removal tool, please follow these instructions:

Note: the removal tool will wipe out your settings and any other Norton products installed on your computer.

-download the removal tool from here and save it to your desktop:

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&ssfromlink=true&sprt_cid=1...

-make sure that you have downloaded NIS 2010 and saved it to your computer / have the NIS 2010 disc handy.

-make sure you have got your product key handy (on the CD sleeve of NIS 2010 in the packaged version; included in the confirmation e-mail if you have purchased NIS 2010 as a download from the online Symantec Store).

-deactivate any other security software you may have. However, please leave Norton running. As a side note: running two real-time security programs on one machine is not recommended.

-if you wish, you can create a system restore point

-disconnect physically from the internet (remove the internet cable) that way your computer is not exposed.

-if you're in Vista: right-click on the removal tool icon, run as administrator; run the removal tool 2-3 times, rebooting each time after every run

-after running the removal tool: if in Vista: right-click NIS 2010 icon and choose "run as administrator"/insert the NIS 2010 disc, let NIS 2010 install itself. When it wants to connect with the web, connect again to the internet. During activation, you will be asked to type in your NIS 2010 product key.

Re: Norton Internet Security 2004 - Renewal Date Not Installed problem

Reinstalling after using the tool fixed the problem but when I go to use the tool to update Live Update since my Subscriptions Services update keeps failing the yellow warning box just says the add-on that wants to run is "Not Available from SupportSoft, Inc instead of Symantec VSS from Symantec Corporation like the pictures show. Is there something wrong with the tool or is it still ok to use?

"Considering that you are refusing to upgrade to the latest version of NIS simply because of an ad-blocker - which has been part of browsers like IE and Firefox for quite some time now - I think that you are exposing yourself and your computer to a lot of risks"

From what I remember the pop-blocker in IE at least when it first came out wasn't that good unless that was just the Windows Firewall. Which was why I stayed with my version. I would have used the version I got for my parents computer NIS 2007 but why should we have to download a patch just to get something that should be in the actual box version? I know it may seem silly to you but I feel that it should be included with NIS. Unless all security companies are letting the browsers do the ad blocking now? I haven't really thought if ad-blocker should be with the browser or the security software I normally just felt like it should be part of security. Sorry if this part is kind of confusing.

Hi, Baowoulf,

What Operating System and Service Pack do you have installed?  You can only install Norton 2006 Products and Newer on Windows X.P. and Vista, and Norton 2009 and 2010 Products on Windows 7.

"User's who have an active subscription to Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus 2006 and newer can update to the 2010 for FREE by visiting the Norton Update Center."

At the Time of Writing, Norton 2010 Products and Windows 7 were the Newest Versions Released.

Re: Norton Internet Security 2004 - Renewal Date Not Installed problem

I am using Windows XP Home Service Pack 3. I just made this account last night so I  haven't checked yet to see if there is a place in your profile where you can put such information so that it is viewable to others.

Do you know if it is still safe to use that active x control that you get when you click on Run It Now on the page

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/pfdocs/1999051911110813

I believe this is why the Subscription Services update keeps failing on me since I have a old version of LiveUpdate.

Hi,

So, if I understand you correctly, you have Windows X.P. with N.I.S. 2004 installed?  If this is the case, I'd strongly recommend Upgrading to N.I.S. 2010 as suggested by Yaso.  You're only getting Virus Definitions once-a-week with Norton 2004 Products, whereas with Norton 2009/2010 Products, you get Virus Definitions' Updates - Pulse Updates - every five-to-fifteen minutes, and lots of other Updates as well to keep your computer Secure; and you're missing out on other Features which are not in N.I.S. 2004.  Since your Subscription is due to Expire shortly, I'd recommend doing that as soon as possible.  I'd also recommend Upgrading for free your parents' computer since they have N.I.S. 2007.

If, however, you are still wanting to Fix the issue with your Norton 2004 Product, I'd suggest that you un-install LiveUpdate, re-start your computer, and then proceed to install the Latest Version on LiveUpdate as instructed to by that Support Document.

Please let us know how you get on.

Hi Baowoulf,

As I mentioned before and as Floating_Red has also said, it is best if you purchase and install NIS 2010. It is very much worth it - NIS 2004 is really too old in the face of today's threats, and once again, please remember that you are not receiving any technical support for NIS 2004 and not benefiting from all the features NIS 2010 has to offer.

You can read more about NIS 2010 features over here:

Re: Norton Internet Security 2004 - Renewal Date Not Installed problem

The name the picture gives for the active X control and the name of the actual active x control that wants to run from the page are different.

The picture says Symantec VSS from Symantec Corporation while the actual active x control wanting to run says Not Available from SupportSoft, Inc.

Still safe to run?
