Norton Internet Security 2012 - Blue screen shutdowns.

I used to have NIS 2011 and never any problems with it.

Bought a new Zotac PC. Installed Win7 Home Premium 32bit OEM.

Installed XBMC Dharma 10.1 all was running very well. This was set up as a media PC.

Had it running well for 6 months and decided I would install NIS 2012.

When I installed NIS 2012 within a few days the blue screen of death messages started to appear.

I've tried a System Restore a few times but makes no difference.

before NIS2012, did you have NIS2011 or an other AV product on the problematic machine?

No not on this one. This is set up for a Media PC to play videos via XBMC Dharma 10.1

I only decided to put NIS 2012 on this Zotac PC a month or so ago and since then its the only varable of random closing down and re booting.

I also have had NIS 2012 on my desktop PC and that too hasn't gone well. The desktop PC has had NIS 2009, 2010 and 2011 without incident. 2012 has been a real problem for me. I can't do a full system scan no matter what I do or try. I've tried to un install then re install to no avail. On that PC it can only do a quick scan so will have to live with that. It also has other weird stuff which I'll post at a later date as I really want to get the random booting rectified on the Zotac PC.

On an Asrock PC I had NIS 2011 and no problems but NIS 2012 would not intstall. I bought NIS 2012 for many PC's that I have and starting to think I maybe better off renewing NIS 2011 which has been flawless.

These are all off different NIS 2012 disks.

I'm now starting to think I'll have to re format my Zotac PC and go with the older NIS 2011 and just renew. My only concern is that its really outdated and the later version will be more up to date with how to combat hacker attacks and the very latest viruses.

The Zotac PC is the Zotac Zbox ID36 3D Blu-Ray.

Parts in the system.

Intel 80Gb SSD

4Gb Kingston DDR3 Memory

Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit OEM

I've only installed XBMC Dharma 10.1 and that was when I bought it 6 months or so ago. Its been running flawlessly.

Today when I turn on the Zotac PC, Norton discovers an error.

NIS has encountered an error.

Error: 3047,40000

So it appears to be a known bug with NIS 2012. Maybe I need to download this for my other PC's running NIS 2012 ?

Question, why doesn't a live update fix these bugs with NIS 2012 please ?

Norton has a support article here titled Error: "3047,40000" appears on my Norton 2012 product that recommends downloading the latest virus definitions file (which today is likely version 20111218-009-v5i32.exe).

Since you've been getting BSODs since installing NIS 2012 it might make more sense just to do a clean re-install of NIS 2012 with the Norton Removal Tool using the step-by-step instructions posted here.

Since downloading this update tool of

20111218-009-v5i32.exe

the Zotac PC hasn't crashed. I set it up to be on each day and I'll see how it goes in the coming days.

Hoping this has fixed it.

I'll give it another few days to confirm if its fixed it or not.

The re-direct from www.norton.com/nrt works fine from my Firefox browser.  I've seen this happen before with users who had problems with Internet connections and browser re-directs to secure websites because of residual files from an old Norton installation that wasn't uninstalled correctly - see Kevin_O's thread here titiled Can't Access Norton Removal Tool for one example.  Kevin_O's reported here that the only solution was to download the Norton Removal Tool to a USB stick from another computer and then copy it to his problem computer.

I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect you're going to continue to have ongoing problems on your PC - particularly with Internet connections and file downloads from secure servers - until you manage to wipe all the NIS files and registry entries currently on your system using the instructions found here.  Those instructions include a link to the NIS 2011 offline installer so you can use them to downgrade from NIS 2012 back to NIS 2011 if you wish.

Problem is that the Zotac PC never had a Nortons version on it. That was a new PC bought earlier this year and used as a media PC only to play videos with XBMC Dharma 10.1

So a bit pointless using a removal tool when there was no previous Norton's on that Zotac PC.

My other PC's have had earlier Norton's and I always used the removal tool. This latest 2012 is very buggy and as I've explained I discovered the problem was with NIS 2012 and downloaded the patch to fix that. So far no crashes. Will report back in a few days to see if the crashes have finally been fixed with that Norton update.

My desktop PC I removed the older NIS 2011 with the removal tool. This desktop PC can't do a full scan without many errors. I can only do a quick scan. Been using NIS since 2009 and bought every version since. Done a few un installs using the tool and re installed but still the full scan has a red error on it.

When I try to do a full system scan on my desktop PC I get that error of ---

White cross x - then - Error During Scan(red background with white text).

Tried so many times and now I'll have to live with no full system scan on my desktop pC.

Decided to use norton removal tool again on the desktop PC but this time I used another NIS 2012 disk I have and that went through well. Am able to do a full scan. Phew, one hurdle gone.

My Zotac been running for several hours without a crash and now my desktop pc is at last able to do a full scan.
