Norton Internet Security and Flickr

Any idea why Flickr has stopped working properly since the last update.

It displays the web site correctly, but not the iconised pics (which are displayed as little white placeholders).

If I turn off Browser Protection, they display correctly.

Amazingly I can't find anything on Support for this issues.

It works fine on PCs that don't have Norton INternet Security.

I'd be very grateful if someone could help - Support is really lacking on this issue.

Hi Mike,

May I know Which version of NIS you have installed?

You can find the version from About box under the Support from main UI.

Which browser do you use? is it IE,FF or Chrome?

Hi - thanks for getting back to me, Sagar! Very much appreciated.

I'm using Norton Internet Security v19.6.2.10.

And I'm using Internet Explorer 9.0.8.

It's pretty strange. If I turn off Smart Firewall and Browser Protection, restart IE I can then see everything in FlickR just fine, No problem.

Then if I turn them back on and restart IE, all the pics in FlickR go (and are eventually replaced by a small red cross).

Have you come across this before.

I see someone else has on the forum, but there's no published solution.

I would e-mail Norton Support but I can't find an e-mail address. The help assistant doesn't really allow me to ask a direct question I don't belive.

I'd be very chuffed if you knew the answer!

Hi Mike,

Check in the IE -> Tools-> Internet Options -> Advanced Tab -> Under Multimedia -> Check if the Show pictures is checked.

If not check it or you can restore advanced settings to default if you have not made changes earlier to it on purpose.

Yes, Show Pictures is ticked.

Weirdly the problem goes away if I turn off NIS Smart Firewall and Browser Protection. I'm wondering if I should turn them off permanently - I spend a lot of time working on my photos in FlickR.

I checked with flickR and they can't see any problems with my account. Also when I access flickR from my office computer at work (doesn't use Norton), it seems to work fine. Both my home PCs (which both use NIS), don't seem to work.

Are you aware if this is a wider issue or not? Is FlickR normally compatible with NIS? Or re other people having problems?

Hi Mike,

Thank you for reverting back and sorry to see you have the issues still exists.

Have you tried to use the Firefox 11.0 or Firefox12.0 and see how it goes and I would suggest to not Turn OFF the Browser protection off permanently.

In case if you want to check Photos in Flickr I would suggest to use FireFox Browser or Chrome, in case if you want to use only IE then make sure you won't turn off the Browser Protection permanetly may be temporaly you till you use the flickr.

I will escalate this to our development team with this issue.

Hiya

For completeness, here's what I've found.

I didn't want to use anything other than IE. So I used my work computer to do FlickR work and just put up with it not working at home.

Anyway, after installing all the latest Windows updates (a load of security updates) on my home laptop, the problem went away (on my home laptop). However on my home desktop, the same updates didn't make any difference.I've attached a screenshot showing the updates installed. It could be coincidence that this "fixed" the problem. But it def wasn't working before I installed the updates and it def was working after I installed updates.

Anyway, I now have FlickR again, (albeit on only one PC) so closing this case (altho' I don't know for a fact what the solution was).

Here's a pic of the updates that seem to have helped on my laptop. Hope this helps someone.

Oh, just noticed, the following update hadn't actually been installed on my home desktop: "Security Update for Microsoft Silverlight KB2636927". It hadn't been installed on desktop PC when I ran auto-updates first time round.

I installed this update on my desktop PC and lo-and-behold, FlickR now works fine.

Again, I don't know for a fact, but this could be the answer to the problem!
