Norton Internet Security vs. Outlook Express 6 with XP-SP3: Incompatible?

I've had this computer for more than 5 years. It came with XP (now SP3). I've always used Outlook Express (now 6).

Live Update every day. Complete scans monthly. No viruses.

A month ago, at about the time I had an issue with NIS 2011, I began to get spam about male enhancement. More each day. Before NIS 2012, my message rules in OE prevented such e-mails. Now the mysterious "Auto generated Norton Anti Spam" feature apparently keeps the OE message rules from working. What's worse, the "Auto generated Norton Anti Spam" feature seems incapable of learning what I consider to be spam (when I highlight the spam and click, "This is spam"). What's even worse, the icon for NIS Antispam disappears about every other day, and when I open NIS to look at Settings-Network-Message Protection, several times a week the Welcome Screen switch (which seemingly turns on the Norton icon in OE6) is turned off, after I KNOW I turned it on and clicked apply.

From what I read elsewhere on this forum, it sounds like NIS2012 and OE6 are incompatible. Is this so? Is OE6 no longer supported by Symantec? Is this also true with other Norton products? I thought NIS 2012 would be more capable than its predecessor, not less.

Hello tomboy6

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum

I am using xp pro and my computer is over 5 years old also. I am also using OE 6. However, I have never used the Antispam feature of NIS. I rely on my ISP's Spam Detector. What does come thru to OE 6 and is spam, I just delete it without opening it. I am also using NIS 2012 and used NIS 2011 before that.

But if it's part of the product, it ought to work. Obviously, the ISPs screen is not working, so NIS is the last defense.

Does a representative of Symantec/Norton ever visit this forum?

Many Symantec employees visit the forum daily.  Are the spam messages being tagged with [Norton AntiSpam] in the subject line?

Re: Norton Internet Security vs. Outlook Express 6 with XP-SP3: Incompatible?

Spam is supposed to be tagged with [Norton Antispam] in the subject line? Who would know? Doesn't happen in my version.

As far as I can see, Norton Antispam exists ONLY as an icon. When I first started to get this trash, I thought that Norton Antispam just needed to be "trained", since I had just installed NIS 2012. I don't think it's learned a darn thing. I've received 304 spams in 14 days, most of the "FROMS" of which would be obvious spam to a kindergarten student. Likewise the subjects.

NONE of the 304 spams have been identified by NIS in any way, whether by 'tagging' or by deletion or diversion to the Norton Antispam folder.

Hey, if Norton Antispam's just an empty suit, just tell me. If it doesn't prevent spam, it doesn't prevent spam. I'll then turn off the Message Protection features, and seek another anti-spam solution.

It appears as though NIS expects one to open the spam, identify the sender's internet address, and report it to the Symantec Seal Team. This seems counterproductive on several counts, including: 1) shouldn't open spam; 2) the bad guys seem to acquire internet addresses like road kill draws flies, so reporting 1 of the 3,000 addresses Bad Guy #19 used today seems unproductive.

Which port are you using for incoming mail?  Norton can only filter messages on POP3 port 110.  If Norton AntiSpam is working it should append [Norton AntiSpam] in the subject line and, on clients that support integration, place the spam in either the Junk Folder or a Norton AntiSpam Folder (otherwise, spam goes to the Inbox in unsupported clients).

Never had a problem with 2011 but 12 did as many others. You said that you read other posts, if so you will know the problem with 2012.  As you said that your icon disappears as others and then don't work.

Try  enableing boot time protection reboot and see what happens. It helped many others includeing me. I went back to 11 because of this but on my backup is now working great.

Like many others includeing me when the icon is not there neather is the antispam. Try what I posted above and see as everyone now has no problems.

Hello nmac

I just wanted to point out that the Gurus are not Norton employees. The Norton Employees have their names in RED. We do, however, read other people's threads and posts and try to help out. Thanks for reading.

Re: Norton Internet Security vs. Outlook Express 6 with XP-SP3: Incompatible?

Not really knowing what POP3 means, I googled "email pop3 port settings" and clicked the top URL.

It said 110 was the standard POP3 setting , and 995 (which is what mine is on) is the standard SECURE POP3 setting.

Then I clicked the second one down, and it said 995 was the SSL POP3 port. I think SSL means secure socket layer. I don't know what that means. But it sounds more secure than non-secure socket layer ports (110).

Not to demean your thoughtful contribution, SendOfJive, but you are only one poster, anonymous at that, and not a Norton representative. So when you suggest a NON-SECURE solution to a computer SECURITY problem, and it is not verified as good by a Norton employee, I'm reluctant to change something my computer tech person established.

That aside, why would Norton REQUIRE a NON-SECURE port, and not even tell a customer during the setup process?
