Norton PC Checkup

Today, on April Fool's day, Norton PC Checkup was installed and launched in my new computer without my knowledge or a request of my permission.  Since it was April 1st. and I had just started my computer, I thought that this might be a virus or joke. I have looked at the official list of available Norton software.  Norton PC Checkup is not on the list.  I took a chance and executed Noton's PC Checkup and discovered that it did not agree with the evaluation of the performance of my computer that had been evaluated by Hewlett Packard's software on March 31st.  I did not allow PC Checkup to modify my computer; instead, I elected to do the review manually.  I tried to copy the instructions into MS Word 2010.  This was not successful.  Characters on the left margin were cut off regardless of page margin adjustments.  I thought that this was odd, since the instructions were quite long.

May I ask if some official of Norton would assure me that Norton PC Software is legitimate?  Thank you.

Re: Norton PC Checkup

Hi Imageman,

Norton PC Checkup is a legitimate program.  If you updated Adobe Flash Player or some other program recently, PC Checkup may have been bundled along with it.  (My Adobe Flash Player installation included an offer for Google Chrome - it was prominent and easy to opt out.)  You should be able to uninstall PC Checkup through Add/Remove Programs.  Many free downloads now come with bundled software, so it is really important for users to read each screen pertaining to the download and installation of whatever application you are installing.  You always have the option to opt out.
