If your subscription has already been activated on a PC then there is no benefit in continuing with the trial as the days have started to count down from the first activation.

That does make sense, so I guess I have plans for tomorrow.. Since the trial version does not seem to be working correctly, would you recommend uninstalling it and downloading a fresh version? Just putting my existing key on that trial version would just extend the days, wouldn't it?

Yep, it would only extend the days.
If you have no other Norton products installed, I would recommend backing up your ID safe, then running the Norton Remove & Reinstall Tool, but this will remove all Norton products.
Have your Activation Key handy.
If you have NU, Ghost etc installed, backup your ID Safe, then download a fresh copy of NIS12 here - http://www.norton.com/nis12. Save it. Then do a Control Panel uninstall and run the new copy by double clicking.
Let us know how you get on.
Thanks, Dave.

I still can't replace that Google search bar with the Norton Safe Search, so I deleted the Google search toolbar. At least I'm off the trial version and I do have the Norton Safe Search bar next to Safe Web. Thanks for your help.

When you first opened IE9 after installing NIS 2012, the following notification would have been displayed by the Norton toolbar:
This notification appears to control whether or not you see Norton Safe Search listed as an available Search Provider under IE9. If you just clicked OK to the above, then Norton Safe Search should be listed as a Search Provider. If you chose not to enable Norton Safe Search, then you will not see it listed as a Search Provider.
The choice you made above is important as it appears that this is the only chance you get to make Norton Safe Search appear as an option in IE9's Search Provider list. If you chose not to enable it, then you will have to reinstall NIS 2012 and choose enable when the notification above appears. Unless, of course, someone posts a way of enabling it without a reinstall!
As this feature is set at a user account level, a simple way for you to test it out is to create a new user account on your machine. Open IE9 under the new user account and enable Norton Safe Search as per the notification above. Then check your IE9 Search Providers and you should see Norton Safe Search listed. Delete this new user account when you are finished testing.
Hope this helps.

Hello elsewhere and thanks for the information. My problem is that I bought the PC and it had IE9 and the trial version of NIS already installed. I guess I could find a way to delete IE9, then reinstall it, just to see if I get that option or not. With this store bought version, Google was my only option.

Hi,
elsewhere never mentioned deleting IE9. Please read his post again.
Thanks, Dave.

Hi Elsewhere,
Even if we miss the Norton Safe Search pop up, We will have option to enable Norton safe search from Norton Toolbar(Left top corner)-> Select Enable Safe search, once you enable, you can see Norton safe search box in Toolbar.
Now restart IE, Go to tools->Manage addons->Search Providers->Select Norton Safe Search->Click on "Set as Default button". Now we can see both Norton safe search box and Norton Search provider in IE. In IE9 we can see search provider in address bar itself.
Note: 1. Norton Safe search supported only for following Regions. The regions are US,UK,Canada,Australia and German
To check the region of your system (Go to Control panel->Regional and language options->Regional options->
Location
2.Norton Safe search will be available only if use English and German OS with supported region(mentioned above)
3. Norton Safe search option available for both trial version and paid.
Attached screenshot for reference
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Senthil

Hi Senthil
That was the way I was hoping it would work as well but unfortunately it doesn't. I've tested this on a Windows 7 and a Windows Vista machine and the both behave the same way. If you choose not to enable Norton Safe Search from the pop up then you won't be offered the Norton Safe Search Provider, even if you decide to enable Norton Safe Search from the toolbar at a later stage. The only way to make the Norton Safe Search provider available is to uninstall/re-install NIS 2012 and make sure that you select 'Enable Norton Safe Search' when the pop up appears.
I notice from your screenshot that 'ask.com' is your Norton Safe Search provider. On my machines, the Norton Safe Search provider is 'int.search-results.com'. Could this potentially be a contributing factor in terms of this issue?
