After the initial upgrade to FF4, my toolbar disappeared entirely as well. I did follow the instructions of the previous poster who suggested the compatibility reporter add-on, and installed it. This prompted a restart of FF4. After restart, I see that my Norton Toolbar was restored (see screenshot below) along with Identity Safe, however, as I expected, Identity Safe is partially crippled. My logins are all still visible under the dropdown, however, the 'auto-fill' functionality does not work. After the nightmare I experienced last year for Identity Safe with the major 3.6 FF release, I got smart and backed up my Identity Safe logins, so I am not worried about my data, but the product is now crippled. For each site I don't recall the credentials of, I have to call up the login dropdown, reference the password and manually type it in. This is a time-suck and a major drag.

Symantec's inexcusable tardiness on support for something they include in a $60 annual subscription fee suite is a bit outrageous given the lead time they have had on this FF4 release. To wait two weeks and then learn I have to wait FIVE MORE is ludicrous. Hey Symantec: do you plan to pro-rate me for the crippled functionality I must suffer for 2 out of the 12 months I am paying you for your 'suite'?

As those of us who use Identity Safe regularly know, it is a very sweet time-saving module that one can develop a dependency upon -- and a fondness for -- quickly. Crippling it with the market's leading browser forces me to either abandon Firefox for a few months to use IE Explorer or Chrome, or downgrade to an older FF version. But now that I am seeing how blazing fast FF4 is, I am really not sure how to proceed. I can either suffer along with an older slower FF that was really beginning to annoy me with its turtle-like load and run times, or enjoy the blazing fast (6X) new FF4 release but endure the manual typing in of credentials needing authentication until....MAY 2011...??!!

Seriously Symantec....? SERIOUSLY....? Hey Product Management: WAKE THE FRACK UP....!! Your development roadmap priorities are way off base....

Norton Toolbar does not support Chrome at all! I read somewhere in these forums that they are "considering" implementing the Norton Toolbar in future. According to what I read, Norton considers Chrome not to be "popular" enough, hence the omission of the toolbar. Where have you been dear Symantec developers? When will you realise that you need to stop worrying about IE, and start concentrating on the browsers that are actually in use today?

It is extremely frustrating to have to go back to FF3, after having used FF4 for a brief spell. Unfortunately we don't have much choice. It is agonising having to wait so long for FF4 compatibility, and to think the wait has barely started if we go according to the statement that was made on this forum. "Having to wait until May."

As far as I can tell, and please forgive me if I am wrong, nobody has answered yet about what will happen when FF5 & 6 is released later this year? Does this current fiasco mean we will be in the same boat again? If so, it means that us FF users will be without the Identity Safe for a good few months? Or we will have to be patient and use outdated software?

I was very upset when this whole fiasco first came to light upon the release of FF4. Symantec kept their heads down and hoped nobody would notice. Not a word was said. As far as they were concerned, their product worked with IE9, so screw the rest of us. They even made a statement on this forum to warn people about using IE9 in compatibility mode when accessing the forum. Did they say anything about FF4? No, not a word. It was only when people started complaining, that an announcement was made. It was far too late by then however, the damage had already been done and Symantec had openly displayed their attitude towards FF users.

I had no option but to downgrade to FF3 and "calmed down a bit." However, I have now reached the point where I think it's just totally ridiculous! I still don't fully understand why the Norton Toolbar and Identity Safe is incompatible with FF4. Yes, some Symantec people have made some comments on here, but nobody has satisfactorily explained why we are still having this problem after FF4 was in Beta and RC for so long. Especially after the comments on the Mozilla website about the "five month window" for developers? What did the Symantec developers do during the almost year that FF4 was in development? Concentrate on IE9 instead?

I am sorry to say, but I have now finally lost it with this whole mess! Today is only the beginning of April. That means another whole month until May and supposed compatibility? There is no way I am prepared to wait another month! And still we don't know what will happen when FF5 & 6 is released? Symantec's track record regarding FF, starting with FF3xxx, suggests that it can only be a very long and frustrating year for FF users.

Is it really worth all the hassles when competitors' products are fully compatible with FF4 since day one?

As a matter of fact, I do! Not only can I provide documentation, but I am also talking of personal experience. I was using a competitor's product which also happens to include a password manager. (For the sake of this conversation I shall refer to the Identity Safe as a password manager.) That password manager worked with FF4 when it was still in Beta and it is still working. It also works with Chrome.

My subscription came to an end and I thought I would give something else a try. Based on all the good reviews I read about Norton, and the built-in password manager, I went with NIS. I was extremely happy with it, until FF4 got released. Never in my wildest dreams did I even contemplate this compatibilty issue. It is my own fault however for not doing my "homework" and realising what happened with earlier releases of FF. I genuinely did not expect this problem from such a major organisation like Symantec.

I rely heavily on a password manager and without warning, it became unusable to me. That is what this whole issue is about. I don't think too many people would have complained if the "Safe Web" feature was unavailable for instance. It does not impact on one's productivity, but the lack of a password manager renders one totally helpless.

I would never "make up" something in my posts. Nothing is "sucked from the thumb." Everything I have mentioned can be traced to a source.

Perhaps the time has come for me to bid farewell? I am not going to achieve anything by posting in this forum. I vented my frustrations like so many others, but companies like Symantec are too powerful to genuinely care about "the little people."

If you want proof of said competitor's product, I am happy to oblige.

Regards,

JV

Well, it's not Kaspersky, who's password manager apparently worked with the Firefox 4 Betas, but does not work with the final release.  As Symantec employees have said, until there is an RTM version available, all the previous efforts to develop compatible add-ons for the new browser can be for naught.

Re: Norton Toolbar 5.5 incompatible with Firefox 4 RC1

I seem to be more the odd-man-out on this one. Not unusual for me. I don't use the toolbar. I don't use Identity Safe. But, I do rely on Safe Web to keep me from wasting time going to bad sites from my Google searches. It saves me a fair amount of time and gives me a certain comfort level.

I have only moved over to FF as my primary browser in the last 6mos and only switched over to NIS in the last year. I never gave it a second thought I decided to upgrade to FF4. Oops! I was unaware of Symantec's past record re: FF. Fortunately, my RoboForm works great with FF4 so I have no worries about not being able to enter ID's, passwords or other form data but, I do miss the Safe Web icons on my Google search listings.

I hope this kind of thing doesn't happen too many more times before my 3yr subscription is up.

Great... if someone has built a better mouse trap.  I'm very interested.

What is the product ?

What are the products ?

Please include documentation for all the competitors products that were compatible with FF4 from day one.

<< jvuk quote: Is it really worth all the hassles when competitors products are fully compatible with FF4 since day one? >>

Since, Firefox currently maintains a 42.4% penetration in terms of browser statistics while IE has dropped to a 26.5% stake..  There may be other users that would appreciate your knowledge.

Your personal recommendations are also welcome.

Thanks

Not odd so far as I am concerned since I don't use Identity Safe or the Toolbar and I do like Safe Web flags on my Google search and I still get them with the Norton Tool bar unchecked in the toolbars to show context menu. But I use IE8.

This is a genuine question since I don't use FF -- do the OK flags etc not show on Google searches when you are using FF 4? I ask because clearly they do not appear to be dependent on the toolbar appearing as long as the Add-ons are called up by the browser.

TIA

Re: Norton Toolbar 5.5 incompatible with Firefox 4 RC1

Sadly, I screwed up big time.  I "upgraded" FF4 and IE9 within a couple of days.  What did I get?  Two fast browsers neither of which have ny Norton Toolnar and password manager.  At this stage, I'm ready to dump Norton altogether.  If they want to keep me as a customer they'd **bleep** well have my system updated via their internet updating system and have it by May 1.  Enough is enough.  I loaded NIS one, I expect them to take of the problems they created and update my FF4 and IEp browsers.  Further, I'm now using Safari and Opera and if I have to swich browser it'll be to one of them and another security system as well.
