Norton Toolbar malfunction

When I started IE8 today, there was no Norton Toolbar. I right clicked on the toobars and Norton was selected with a check  mark. I tried unchecking and then checking the Norton Toolbar but nothing appeared. I went into Tools>Manage Add-ins and there were three item: Norton Toolbar ,Symantec NCO BHO and Symantec Intrusion Prevention. I disabled them all, exited Tools, went back into Manage Add-ons, enabled all three previously listed items and when I exited all that appeared in the toolbar area was a small square with the same type of "X" that you see when you want to close a tab. I exited IE8 and rebooted Windows (XP Pro for your info). When I started IE8 again the same problem existed. What can I do now? PS I'm using NIS2011

Re: Norton Toolbar malfunction

Hi! Dustydog,

This may sound strange but have you run a complete disk check?  You can do so via the command prompt.  Click Start>Run in the resulting box type in cmd and press enter.  Once the command prompt is open type in CHKDSK /R and press enter, from here you will be informed that the disk cannot be locked because it is in use (wording may vary) and you will be asked if you want to schedule it to run the next time the computer is restarted type Y then press enter.  Type in exit  and press enter to close the command prompt window.  Restart your computer and let the check run to completion; it may or may not list anything found.  This trick has worked on some systems but there have been some that it did not.  I hope it works for you.

Re: Norton Toolbar malfunction

Hi dustydog,

Welcome to the Norton Community.

What version of NIS do you have from Support > About?

In addition to what Tech83 suggested have you done any recent upgrades to NIS? Any recent Windows updates or other software updates/installs?

Do you have any other security software installed besides NIS?

Best wishes.

Allen

Re: Norton Toolbar malfunction

Tech83;

I ran chkdsk as you suggested. It did not resolve the issue.

Allen;

I am running NIS version 18.5.0.125. I have Superantispyware, Malwarebytes AnVir Free Edition and CCleaner installed on my computer but none are running in the background. The only updates I have installed recently are automatic Windows updates, Liveupdate etc. NIS did recently update to 18.5 automatically. Do you think I should reload 18.1?

Best Regards

Re: Norton Toolbar malfunction

Hi! Dustydog,

Sorry, the trick did not work.

Symantec has acknowledged some problems with version 18.5.0.125 of NIS and they are currently working to correct them.  Personally I would recommend un-installing the version currently installed and re-installing the previous version (Version 18.1.0.37) and bringing it up to date.

I recommend that you wait and see what AllenM suggests; he may have more insight into your problem.

Re: Norton Toolbar malfunction

Hi dustydog,

Avira Antivir is a resident antivirus that normal does and should run in the background.  It may be causing the issue and really should be completely uninstalled if you are using Norton or any other antivirus.

Re: Norton Toolbar malfunction

I removed Anvir and rebooted the machine. No luck.

Removed NIS2011 V18.5, ran Norton Removal Tool, reinstalled NIS2011 V18.1. Problem is resolved. However, I lost all my  Identity Safe info which will take a while to gather and reinstall. I hope when LiveUpdate installs 18.5 automatically in the future that I won't run into the same problem. I think I read somewhere in these forums how to prevent 18.5 from loading, but am not sure. Am I right?

Hi dustydog,

Can you confirm your problem with Identity Safe? Is the problem that NIS will not recognize your password? If so there was a relatively recently introduced problem in 18.1 that prevented the ID safe password from being recognized.

The fix for this is to upgrade back to 18.5. The original toolbar issue that you reported would probably have been cleared up by uninstalling NIS, running the removal tool and reinstalling. I do not view that as a core issue with 18.5.

So again if your ID safe password is not being recognized I highly recommend that you upgrade back to 18.5. Try running Live Update and see if this gets pulled down. You might have to run it more than once to get the new version.

Please see the following thread for information on the ID safe password issue:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/HELP-Can-t-log-into-Identity-Safe-aft...

Several others with this issue (including myself) have confirmed this solved the issue.

After updating back to 18.5 and verifying that you can log into ID safe again I would recommend that you do periodic backups of your ID safe as a precaution against any future issues. You can back up ID safe from Settings > Web Settings > Identity Safe > Backup Identity Safe Data.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen
