I marked this as SOLVED, but after a PC restore the problem is back!

I keep receiving three Norton popups in lower right corner of screen

(1)) TbHelper2.exe is safe

(2) uninstall.exe is safe,

3) update.exe is safe

I know they are caused by FreeCorder 6 - if I remove this toolbar in Internet Explorer 9 I don't get them.

Since I want to continue to use FreeCorder 6 is there some way that I can tell Norton Internet Security to stop telling me the programs are safe?

it is very annoying to get these pop-ups every time I open Internet Explorer.

Welcome,

I will assume that you are using the current version of NIS

open the UI -> settings -> network -> turn off notifications -> continue to general -> Norton tasks -> turn off Norton task notifications go to other settings -> special offer notification -> turn it off

That should turn off all of the notifications allowed by Norton. If you're still getting those messages you may need to go in and exclude the programs from scans.

Everything Dick said about Norton generated messages is true. 

One additional thing. Do you know if these .exe files are downloads of any kind. There is another kind of message that will alert you also, except these are to alert you of safe or unsafe downloads. These are the Download Intelligence Notifications. If a download is safe, it will present a green message in the lower right hand corner of the browser, if not safe, it may be either orange or red for caution and dangerous.

If not downloads and the other message settings are disabled, it may be something else. Keep us posted.

No, the files are NOT downloads - I can see them in windows Explorer, in the Freecorder program folder.   I have tried specifying them in Norton

Items to Exclude from Scans

and in

Items to Exclude from Auto-Protect, SONAR and Download Intelligence Detection

but with no change.  

What I don't understand is that if I switch off the notifications as per previous advice why do I still get notifications?

By the way, I now have Internet Security 2013 - a free upgrade since I am mid-way in my subscription year - so I am fully up-to-date.

Hi gmh,

I don't know anything about the Freecorder program, so I am out of ideas there. Although you should be able to exclude the files, in the manner you tried, as long as you feel they are safe. Did you exclude them in NIS 2012 before going to the 2013 version? The 2013 version is still a little buggy yet.

Same for the notifications. Did you disable them before or after going to the 2013 version? Do you think you disabled the ones you wanted or maybe didn't save your changes?

Could you describe the notifications. Are they the background tasks alerts when your computer is in idle time. During idle time, the computer will run various tasks in the background and generate notifications unless those notifications are disabled. The idle time tasks still run.

Are they special offer notifications from Norton.

Are they performance alerts, which have nothing to do with your security and are informational only. These usually tell you that your system is using high cpu or memory.

Are they alerts that usually appear in the lower right telling you an attack was blocked, that matched a signature in the intrusion prevention list.

I think I already asked about download intelligence notifications in a previous post.

Any or all of these notifications can be disabled if it's your preference. It doesn't have any impact on the operation of the program at all.

Report back if any of these are what you are having.

-  Just two comments - are you using a windows user account that has administrator priveledges?

My User Account has Administrator Priviledges.

I excluded files and said NO to notifications in both 2012 and 2013 versions.

A fourth program file has crept in - uninstaller.exe.   As with the others, it is on my hard drive, not downloaded.

     

these notifications appear one after the other at the bottom right of the screen each time I open Internet Explorer 9.

I have found a temporary way to reduce the irritation - I disable the Freecorder 6 toolbar unless I want to actually use it, when I enable it again.   There are no messages when it is disabled.

Thanks for the screenshots.  Have you done a "view Detail on them to see if they suggest which program they belng to? 

Totally grasping at straws, but I saw something similar to this once - actually it drove me nuts also with all the popups I was getting.  I aksed my self which fake AV was causing this. 

Anyway it went on for maybe 2 hours, and then I noticed I had received an update for Windows Live Mail - I believe it had something to do with WLM 2011 updating automatically.  Anyway that's the only thing I noticed and it has not occurred again (maybe in the last 6 months or so).  It seems to me like if I opened it "view details" I got a "run option" and since it stated the file was safe I went ahead and let it run.  After going that route many times with different popups, it quit - with me noticing the WLM 2011 update.

Could it possibly be Freecoder 6 attempting to run the updte files it has already downloaded onto your hard drive?  Sort of like the option I use for Windows Update and FireFox - download updates and let me decide when to install them?

They do appear to be download insight popups - could you let us now what "View Details" gives you?

Hi gmh,

It looks like some program (maybe Freecorder - you'd have to look at the details in the alerts to know) is automatically updating to a new version in the background.  You should be able to determine which program is causing this and change its settings to not automatically check for updates.

Here is a snip of the details.   Freecorder is from Applian Technologies.   If I click on Trust Now it has no effect - I get the notification the next time I open IE9.

If I click on Locate (underneath the program file name) I am taken to the file on my hard drive.

There does not seem to be a way to prevent Freecorder from checking for updates (if that is what it is doing).

These are generated from NIS when something is downloaded or updated, no matter how small. The log for these can be found in security history in the download insight log.

You said you disabled all notifications. I thought I would mention this though. The setting for notifications for downloads and updates can be disabled down to Risks Only. This way, the only time a notification would appear for a download or update, is if Norton determines it to be dangerous. Usually an orange or red notification as compared to the green safe notifications.

I tested this for the first time on my system earlier tonight. I disabled the setting down to risks only. Updated a program I use, in which I always have the green notification for a safe download/update. I received no notification this time because it's a safe and not risky download. After, I put my setting back.

If you haven't done this already, open settings and click on - Web > Download Intelligence > Download Insight Notifications > move slider to Risks Only position > click Apply.

If you were to keep receiving notifications after this, you said you didn't want, then something else is going on. I don't see how Norton could generate them if the setting is disabled.
