PC Blue Screened trying to Upgrade to NIS 2009 from NIS 2006, Afraid of NIS 2010 Upgrade

Last year I upgraded to NIS 2009.  All seemed well until I shutdown the pc and rebooted.  I got the BSOD and had to restore my system to the original factory image that was two years old, then two days of installing security updates and software.

I have no problems with NIS 2006 so If it ain't broke why fix it.

I have found Norton support imcompetent.  All they want to do is upgrade you to NIS 2010.  I had some configuration issues with a website and fixed the problem myself.  They really never poked around checking my settings.  Very disappointing,

Running XP SP2 home edition with all security updates.

If you tried to upgrade by installing the new version over the top of the 2006, that would often cause problems.  The blue screen could be caused by not updating audio, video, and network drivers. Those are the most common issues and are usually dealt with easily as long as you know about them.  Unfortunately most people aren't aware of it.

If you decide to keep on with the 2006, you should have another scanner such as Malwarebytes, or Superantispyware to help keep your machine clean.  There is just a greater likelihood of infection with an old antivirus engine.

HI bear3208,

Is there a reason why you don't want to update to NIS 2010? Do you meet minimum system requirements as specified here?

Further, you should upgrade to Windows XP SP 3 as soon as you can. XP SP 2 support expires on 13 July, in just a couple of weeks.

Best wishes.

Allen

Hello bear3208

Welcome to the Norton Users Discussion Forum

There are all sorts of updates you have to do besides the windows updates when you go back to factory install that is 2 years old.  You have to check mobo manufacturer's website for the latest updates to your motherboard and chip drivers and what not. There is more to do than just windows updates and reinstalling solftware and getting updates for them also. You should do these driver updates even before windows updates. Your computer does work better with sp3 and those updates. Your computer is more secure with sp3 also.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view.

thanks for the info.  i have been reluctant to upgrade to SP3 because of reported problem.  will try and do driver updates also.  my philosophy has been if it ain't broke don't fix it.  will do a restore point.  i also have a backup program.  once you have been bitten bad you do not want to repeat the experience.

Hello bear

Some times you have to do updates to prevent things from getting broken or infected.

If it happens again, bear3208, get us the error number.  That may help to identify the culprit.

Hi bear3208,

Can you clarify what type of backup program you have? Do you have a file and folder type backup program or an image backup program?

There is a huge difference. A file and folder backup will only help you restore your documents. It will not restore your OS and programs if your system drive crashes or something else goes wrong.

An image backup on the other hand restores your entire drive and if something went wrong you should be back where you left off in a very short time which can range from a few minutes to an hour or two depending on the amount of data needing to be restoreed. With an image backup you are 100% protected and do not need to fear things like the SP 3 update.

Hope this helps.

Allen

Re: PC Blue Screened trying to Upgrade to NIS 2009 from NIS 2006, Afraid of NIS 2010 Upgrade

I am using CMS Bounceback Ulitimate which is supposedly an image backup and also a folder/file backup.  I tried to download SP3 with NIS AV turned off but it would not install for some reason.  I will go through the MS info on how to prep for SP3 download to make sure I have not missed anything.
