Possible Icon-ized virus?

So, this little icon showed up in the notification area today on my computer. It doesn't do anything, the "notification area properties" labels it "<no title>", it doesn't appear to be linked to any sort of program. I've never seen the icon before, and it's got me worried.

(It's above the arrow)

I've got Vista Home Prem. x64 with NIS 2010. I'm running a full scan ATM, but nothing's come up. Since this thing has popped up, my computer has been doing some odd things. I'm afraid it's a virus, which is why I'm here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi hmmmwhatsthisdo

It looks like an icon for a flash drive or usb connection.

Hi hmmwhatsthisdo,

Welcome to the Norton Community User Forum!!

could you please download Malwarebytes-AntiMalware from here:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

do an update and a full scan, and please post the log file here, unless nothing is found.

Ya, that's what I thought it was at first. But:

  • The arrow is going the wrong way for it to be "safely remove hardware", which has a different icon altogether.
  • I have one flash drive with preloaded software. That's not the icon for it.
  • Both of the icons listed above were also present when I took the screenshot (I cropped them out.)

Re: Possible Icon-ized virus?

Hello hmmwhatsthisdo

You can also run a scan with SUPERantispyware, the free version and have that fix anything it may find.

Here is a free on demand antimalware scanner. It is safe to use on demand with your Norton product.

http://www.superantispyware.com/

Here is another site you can use to get the program.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/

The download button is on the right hand side. Please be careful not to download Spyware Doctor which is on the left side. Also, please don't forget to update the program each time before use of it. In fact you can update it every day just in case some malware may prevent you from updating it.

Please let us know if you find out anything about this. Thanks

Re: Possible Icon-ized virus?

Well, Norton just finished a full scan, with only some tracking cookies found. The icon is still there. I'll wait for MBAM to finish, and then, if all else fails, I'll try a system restore.

PS: I just checked the NIS recent history. There's been quite a few (about 10) failed portscan attempts to my address since this icon popped up. Could these two events be related?

HI hmmwhatsthisdo

If you are going to attempt a system restore you should disable Norton's Tamper Protection or the restore will probably fail.

Hi,

There are several other programs that we would like to try before you attempt a System Restore :-) (which might not help in any event) so before you do, please let us know what MBAM finds (or doesn't find) and we can continue from there :-)

Re: Possible Icon-ized virus?

Well, I ran out of time for MBAM to finish. However, I found something much more interesting. Apparently I hadn't *ever* dumped my temp folders since I got this computer (almost 2 years ago). There was ~30 GB of temp files still in storage. Needless to say, I nuked all of them. I restarted my computer, and presto! The phantom icon is gone. I thought that my temp directory had been moved to a 1.5 GB partition, but apparently I forgot to move %TEMP% and %TMP%.

Hello hmmwhatsthisdo

What do you mean that you ran out of time for the malwarebytes scan to finish? It does take a long time to run usually, but you can let it run overnight. Or try the SUPERantispyware scan that I posted about earlier. That scan doesn't take as long usually.
