Re: Problem with NIS 2010 - Windows XP, SP3 - 17.5 update - Urgent.

Did Toyota purposely cause the current problems with Toyota gas pedals, floor mats and brakes? Of course not. Should Toyota owners just sit back and admire Toyota's hard working engineers? Are Toyota owners just a bunch of whiners like, according to you, those of us who paid Symantec for a defective service (a service that deals with the safety of our computers)? I know very little about computers but I know when I have been sold something that doesn't work -- and I expect there are many Symantec customers who don't realize their security software has gone AWOL. I guess that's good news for Symantec. They aren't whining.

What I meant was that complaining about it over and over isn't going to make them move any faster than they already are. They can't produce the problem in-house and there are those of us who haven't experienced the problem. They are getting closer to a fix with the debugging info but it still hasn't materialized yet. It becomes whining when users do things like threaten to take their business elsewhere, thinking that will get Symantec moving quicker. As far as Toyota goes, they could re-produce the problem so they could come up with a fix faster.

Re: Problem with NIS 2010 - Windows XP, SP3 - 17.5 update - Urgent.

After 3 recent support sessions with Symantec Online Support I am VERY happy to have found this thread!!!    I too have been troubled with the same problem that has affected so many others.  At least I now know that the problem apparently is not with my computer or caused by malware, a virus, Trojan, etc.

It is surprising that the Symantec online support agents I dealt with on 3 separate occasions over the course of the last few weeks were not aware of this issue and / or did not bring the problem to my attention.  Trying to get NIS stable  again on my computer has been quite time consuming.  To date, I have removed / reinstalled NIS 3 times, removed / reinstalled Malwarebytes twice, unnecessarily rebooted countless times, as well as performed 3 full system scans.

Unfortunately, my most recent online tech support session ended with a recommendation to follow up with SYMANTEC VIRUS REMOVAL SERVICE for a FEE if the problem persists!  I wonder how many users of NIS 2010 have actually paid to try to correct this problem.

So, If I can get by without needing access to NIS interface is it OK to just wait until the Fix / Patch is released?  How do I know that Auto-Protect is running in the background, with emails, downloads and when web surfing, etc., etc.? Will my computer be secure if I simply do nothing?

Or would it be better to  (1) Run the Error-Checking Tool  (2) Uninstall NIS 2010 and Reinstall NIS 2009 if the Error Checking Tool does not fix the problem. (3) wait patiently for the much anticipated Fix that hopefully will soon be forthcoming.

Thank you!

Hello All,

I'm happy to tell you that we've completed testing on the Hot Fix for this issue!

We're in the process of finalizing publishing of this Hot Fix, which will be available from a Symantec Support Knowledge Base document and included in a later inline product patch for the Norton Internet Security 2010/Norton AntiVirus 2010 products.

UPDATE - Please see THIS POST for the announcement.

Thank you all for your patience and understanding while we researched and developed this solution.

Cheers,

Re: Problem with NIS 2010 - Windows XP, SP3 - 17.5 update - Urgent.

Hi all:

As this is a major Patch Tuesday from Microsoft, it would be (IMHO) a good idea to apply their fixes first and ensure that everything is working correctly, before requesting/installing the HotFix.

This is the way that I have done it.

Good point .....

I wonder if Microsoft made the patches available to others, like Norton, to see if Microsoft messed things up or not.

If Norton have not had advanced trial of the MS patches I would suggest delaying the hotfix until the MS patches have been installed and verified -- presumably by the guinea pigs who helped test the hotfix first.
