Hi Imacri and Others:
I have been able (as described above) to duplicate this problem now in a fairly consistent manner.
This is for Windows XP, SP3, fully patched via Microsoft Update... My WIn 7 SP1 box seems OK...
(also try to test with any other storage devices, i.e. USB connected HDD, etc., if possible)
1 - Run a Manual Full System Scan and let it complete.
2 - Without closing the Main GUI, run a Manual Quick Scan.
3 - See if the Quick Scan file count increments to completion. Forget the moving "progress" graphic.
4 - If not, check to see your CPU utilization.
5 - If high, check with Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer if one process of ccSvcHst.exe is doing it.
6 - Check to see how many svchost.exe processes are running.
7 - Reboot your system, if control is lost.
Please report back here with your results.
I am familiar with the Memory Leak situation posted here. In my case, I do not have excessive svchost.exe processes before or after the CPU ultilization issue. Additionally, I am also up-to-date on the MS Patch Schedule. If there is an issue with Crypt32.dll, maybe I'm just not seeing it.
See here:

Does NIS 2012 use Crypt32.dll? If yes, in what capacity?

Hi Atomic_Blast:
You might want to take a look at Falco's post here titled NIS 2011 - Unable to Run Scan + Error on Re-boot/Shutdown. It could be a complete coincidence, but Falco mentions a Windows Event error for ccSvcHst.exe for the AVPAPP32.DLL module, which is one of the modules your Process Explorer captured in message # 9.

Hi Imacri:
Thanks. Not done testing yet. I will report back soon with my findings.

Yes, I'm reading them. Watching the forums is only a small part of my job and is becoming smaller so I can't always respond right away. I saw your stack trace and did a little research on it but it wasn't enough to make a significant conclusion. Multiple traces, even from the same busy instance of ccSvcHst, would be useful. The parts of the traces that are common would point to the source of the issue. I've forgotten which OS you're on but if you're on Win 7, forcing a couple of dumps of the ccSvcHst process and providing those to me could be even more useful than the Process Explorer stacks.
