I'm not very computer savy, so please bear with me. I have a desktop and a laptop. Both computers are running Norton Internet Security 2008. For some reason, my computers are not recognizing each other on my network. My dad and I are assuming that it's a firewall issue.
When I click on the network map on my laptop, it shows my laptop only. When I click on the network map on the desktop, I get the following message: "Cannot probe network. This may be caused by tunneling protocols (for example, VPN), or your computer is not online. Do you want to try again?"
I'm running XP on both computers. Can someone please help me before I pull my hair out???? I've gone through the forums and cannot find a solution.

I want to add that I did try disconnecting both computers from the internet, turned off the firewalls, and they still don't "see" each other.
Also, the error message that I gave you in my first post isn't right. I copied it from another post and I just realized that mine isn't exactly the same. The message that I am receiving is: "Cannot probe your network. This may be caused by tunneling protocols (for example, VPN), a very large network, or other technical difficulties." I tried uninstalling Norton on the desktop and reinstalling, but I still get the message.

Just a few questions if you don't mind.
Can you confirm that the Windows Firewall is OFF on both computers?
Are you running the latest version of NIS? Check by opening the main Norton Window and clicking on Help & Support (upper right corner). In the Next window click "About", then in the next window open the Norton Internet Security Tab. The version number is at the top and the latest version is 15.5.0.23.
Thanks

Windows firewall is off on both computers and I am running the latest version of NIS.
Are both computers required to have the same default gateway address?
I really appreciate your help.

Hi,
A few questions:
- Are your computers on the same network within the same subnet? Please private message me with the "ipconfig /all" output of both computers
- Are they connected via the same router?
- Are they connecting wirelessly or wired?
- Are you able to access file shares from one computer to the other? Are you able to ping both ways?
Thanks,
/Chester
