Re: Protection updates not fixed

I, too, was in a similar predicament.

How I arrived may differ.  Microsoft security updates arrived on the 14th.  For some unknown reasons, one of them failed and cascaded into other failed updates during the reboot and a BSOD of 7b.

After agonizing on how to get my pc to boot up, I eventually got it to work.  Consequently, the last known good configuration caused a breakdown in the NIS, 4030 error and Intrusion Prevention failing to set.

Like you, I followed the help and support protocols' line of inquiry without relief.  I then took the ultimate leap (as recommended in the protocols) and used NIS' uninstall from the start menu/programs. I thought I had the current version of the Norton Removal Tool.  Alas, it was only good through version 2010.

I marshalled on and uninstalled NIS 2011 while saving my settings.  After rebooting, I reinstalled the latest build.  After another reboot, the system came up functional, except for the updates and security updates.  Once the security updates were taken care of methodically and meticulously, my PC was back to normal.

Hello Dick,

Sorry for the delay, and thank you very much for your reply.

Concerning your suggestions, I didn't reboot when I ran liveupdate because NIS didn't mention that it was needed.

I reboot my system after a major update (ex. from version 18.05 to version 18.06), because it is required by Norton and usually I reboot once more but I didn't know that after each LiveUpdate session I must reboot.

If I follow your suggestion since I run liveupdate 10 times a day I should reboot 10 times.

Is this what you mean?

Too excessive in my opinion, if I may.

Thank you for your reply.

                                                                                     Best regards,

                                                                                     Apostolos,

Sorry I wasn't as clear as I should have been.

For routine live updates it is only necessary to reboot when the program requires it.

When you are doing a reinstall/recovery where the program may be grossly out of date running live update and rebooting after each time insures that all of the downloads install properly before you dump another few megabytes of code on them.

Hope this helps

Re: Protection updates not fixed

Hi Dick,

Thanks for the quick response, I really understand now.

Your suggestions will be very useful next time I will deal with this problem.

Hope not  :-)

I remember once, I didn't use my laptop for about 40 days and LiveUpdate worked fine.

One last question if I may, If the problems reappears next time I'll use the pc and even after consecutive reboots I still have the message: Protection updates...not fixed, what should I do?

Thank you.

Regards,

Apostolos,

Before the problem appears I would download the free version of Malwarebytes scanner. Install it and keep it current - update the definitions about once every week or two. Run their scan just before you put the laptop to bed for a long nap.

When you restart update both Norton and Malwarebytes. I do not think you will have any problems but if you do you will have the tools installed to clean up the mess and continue to march.

Hope this helps

Re: Protection updates not fixed

Dick,

Thanks again for your assistance.

I'll check for malwarebytes, do you know if there are any conflict issues with NIS 2011?

How should I configure this software?  Will it run with NIS or not?

Also is there a special version for Windows 7 64-bit or just a Windows version?

Thank you again.

There are no conflicts between Norton and the FREE version

It must not run with Norton. Use it as an on-demand scanner. It should be active and running only when you click on 'scan'

Re: Protection updates not fixed

Hello again Dick,

The link to the malwarebytes free version doesn't specifies if Windows 7 64-bit is supported.

Can you please confirm that Windows 7 64-bit is supported?

Thanks.
