Removing Norton Internet Security

Norton Internet Security came with my Dell laptop running Windows Vista I bought a few years ago.  I never updated it after the trial period ran out.  Recently I started getting error messages that Live Update stopped working and the program had to be shut down.  I tried to uninstall Norton after my dad noticed how much CPU it was using just running in the background, but that did not work.  I cannot shut down the process from the task manager either because it says "Access is denied."  My dad moved the folders so that Norton won't startup whenever I startup my computer, so at least it is not using up my CPU, but I would still like to remove the program completely.  I tried to download the Norton Removal Tool and it could not display the website.  Is the link expired, or does someone know somewhere else I can download Norton Removal Tool?

Re: Removing Norton Internet Security

Of course access is denied! Norton is trying to protect itself from being killed off by malware. Plus, you SHOULDN't have moved the files. If you open up the start menu, and go to the Norton entry, there is an option called uninstall Norton [product name]. Now I cannot guarantee the full removal of the Norton product. Also, the link http://www.Norton.com/nrt is always active and will always redirect to the correct long link. Sometimes the long link goes dead as Norton updates the instructions and/or the tool itself.

Re: Removing Norton Internet Security

I've tried to uninstall Norton using the Uninstall link from the start window, but nothing would happen.  This is before my dad moved the files.  When I tried to open Norton, setup.exe would show up in the task manager but nothing would happen either.  Could it be my Norton program got infected by malware?

When I go to the link and click on any of the product links there, then click on download on the next page, it can't display the download page.  This is the link it tries to open but can't: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

Re: Removing Norton Internet Security

Hi resplendentposy,

I would not recommend using the FTP link. The correct one  http://www.Norton.com/nrt was shown by Tywin7 in a previous post. Have you tried this one?

Best wishes.

Re: Removing Norton Internet Security

Hello resplendentposy

If your dad moved the folders around, the removal tool now won't be able to find what it needs to find if you can get it going.

It appears that you had a trial period for some time and you had been using that old version for all this time? When the trial period ran out, did you purchase a new license or key? Once the subscription runs out, the program stops working. The question remains though, did you have a license after the trial period ended? If so, what version or year did you have installed? If it has run out, it is very possible that your computer is now infected which is why you can't download the removal tool possibly.. You will probably have to get your computer cleaned up first before you can try to remove NIS, but since every thing has been moved around, I don't know how effedtive the removal tool will be even if you could get it to run now.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view.

It sounds to me like all that has to be done is remove the trail and/or Liverupdate.  I am not sure if LiveUpdate was still a single (separate) program a "few years ago or not", but I remember when we had to remove LiveUpdate as well as the Norton program itself to clean out Norton.

Perhaps you can look in Add/Remove Programs and see if LiveUpdate is still isted - if so, try to remove from there (as well as any other Norton Programs listed).  Then go to the link AllenM provided and select  the 4th option.

Of course that may not work as you dad moved the program.

Re: Removing Norton Internet Security

When I go to http://www.norton.com/nrt it redirects to http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN.  I am not sure which version I have exactly, just that it's called Norton Internet Security.  But I have tried the link "I have a Norton product that was purchased from my service provider," " I have a Norton 2006/2007/2008/2009/2010/2011 product" and "I have Norton Security Suite or Norton Business Suite" and the download link on those pages links to the ftp link, which can't display the page.

Floplot:

I never updated it or anything after the trial period.  I do think I have some sort of infection on my computer because I've noticed some other problems.  I tried installing another antivirus program and couldn't get it to work because Norton was still installed though.

Hold on, I just found Norton_Removal_Tool.exe in my downloads folder and it opened up, so let me try to run that and see if it works.
