Renew Software After Renewing Online

Hello one and all,

It's time to renew my NIS, so I tried clicking on the Renew link, and I got a message saying it could not find the default internet explorer. So I went to http://www.norton.com and renewed it that way. However, when I go back to the NIS already installed on my computer, it still gives my the message, 7 days till renewal.

I have a 3 license NIS, and the program is already on 2 computers. Is ther a was to update the 2 computers without losing the third license?

Re: Renew Software After Renewing Online

Hi bgatto,

Welcome to the Norton Community. What version of NIS do you have? You can find this from Support > About. Also what OS and SP (Service pack) do you have and is it 32 or 64 bit?

It sounds like you renewed directly through Symantec (Norton), is this correct?

If you already renewed online at the Norton website you should be able to get NIS to sync to your updated subscription by going to Support > Subscription status. This will communicate with the Norton server and should update your status.

If you have NIS 2010 or older, the menu will be called Help & Support. Also if you have anything older than NIS 2011 you can update for free to 2011 so please let us know.

It also sounds like you have a different problem in that your default browser is not being recognized. Do you or did you by any chance have Google Chrome installed? If so, please let us know as uninstalling Google Chrome has caused the default browser to no longer work or be recognized. See this thread.

Otherwise to check if IE is the default browser, go to Tools > Internet Options and then click the "Programs" tab, then click on "Make Default". This should set IE back to the default browser.

Hope this helps and please let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Allen

Re: Renew Software After Renewing Online

Hi Allen,

I have version 18.0.5.125 (or NIS 2011). I also have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit with no service pack.

I did have Google Chrome and I uninstalled it. I already set internet explorer as the default explorer.

I did renew through http://www.norton.com before I set my default explorer.

I went to Subscription Status and the only thing I got was it telling me was that I have 4 days remaining, and gives me a link for a file to download. When I download the file and run it, it deletes the current NIS. I ran it again, and NIS 2011 was installed but it still said I have 4 days of subscription left.

What's next?

Hi bgatto,

There is a known issue when uninstalling Google Chrome, in that it does not let go of the default browser settings, and so other programs on your PC, such as your email client, may not be able to find a default browser to use when it is needed.  If you are affected by this, clicking a link in an email message will not work, for example.  Simply making IE the default may not solve this.  To fix the issue you would need to download and install another browser such as Firefox and make it your default browser.  Then make IE the default again (Tools > Internet Options > Programs).  Close IE, and either remove or keep Firefox, whichever you prefer.

Hi bgatto,

You appear to have two different issues. One is with the uninstallation of Google Chrome which I had mentioned before (and SendOfJive reiterated) causes the default browser not to work correctly. You can clear that up by following SendOfJive's advice.

Having to do with your subscription status. When you renewed your subscription did you do so through your Norton Account? Check your account to see if it shows your new subscription renewal. Also did you set up your subscription renewal through the same account that your existing NIS was already registered with? If you used a different Norton Account then this would explain why your subscription status is not updating.

You can visit Customer Service to get this squared away but be sure to check your Norton Account first so you will know what is in there. Chat is the best option.

Please let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Allen
