Hello,
This is my first post but I've tried to find an answer to this question but so far no luck
Although I have a hardware firewall attached to my system I would like to add NIS. However, I have to download NIS and install it direct before any scan takes place. Does this pose a problem? Can the installation be interfered with by a Trojan or virus or whatnot? Or does it matter? I suspect my system is clean, but you never know. Any advice?
Many thanks.

Welcome
While it is never a good idea to go online without protection, if you have a recent version of Windows you at least have the Windows firewall working for you.
Go ahead and download and install the Norton product you wish. After installing, and running the LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available.

Don't forget to then run a 'full system scan' before you do anything else to confirm you have a clean system.
Good luck.

Thanks brummie
That should have been an obvious inclusion to my reply, but it was late last night. ![]()

Hi, Curia_Regis,
Welcome to the Norton Forums!
Yes, it is fine to install N.I.S. on an un-Scanned System. The Install is designed to be used on an Infected System as well as on an Un-Infected System. Can confirm that during the Install, it will do a Quick Scan before it installs the Norton Product. If you have an issues, please let us know.
----------------
Edit:
When the Product installs, please Run Norton LiveUpdate and Re-Start as required. If required to Re-Start, please Run Norton LiveUpdate again upon Re-Start. Keep doing this until you get a message either saying you have all the Updates installed, or until just a Pulse Update is installed. Would then recommed you Run a Full System Scan, dis-connected from the Internet to ensure your system is Threat-free.
---
If you have any other Security Product installed on your system, please un-install this Product before installing Norton Internet Security. Trust this is the 2012 Version you want to install...?

CR,
Does that system have, or had it, any security application installed? If so you need to uninstall it first and if it was not a Norton product run a special tool from the source of that application that we can point you to.
If you have been running a PC with no security application except the hardware firewall (which is very good protection to have) personally I would run a full lsystem scan with Malwarebytes before trying to install Norton since if there is someething lurking there it may try to stop Norton installing or corrupt it.
Make sure you download the free version from the left column and not the free trial of the Pro paid for version since the latter can interfere with Norton later.

Hello, all,
Thank you very much for the kind and useful replies.
Huywngr, many thanks for the suggestion. Sorry, I ought to have mentioned I use Microsoft Security Essentials. What is this 'special tool' I need with which to remove it?
Peterweb, Bummie, and Floating Red, many thanks for the comments. I gather, once MSE is removed, I will then download and install NIS 2012 and run it until all updates and patches are added. Then, I'll disconnect from the net, and do a full scan.
Again, many kind thanks for the help.

Hi Curia_Regis,
To remove MSE you should be able to uninstall it from Add/remove Programs in the Control Panel. If you have trouble, Have a read through here. - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2435760

As Krusty says all you should have to do is uninstall it using the normal WIndows Uninstall/Remove Program.
But here's the link to the page from the master source one of the security applications has put together:
It adds how to remove it manually and it also gives a link to a Microsoft KB page with one of their FixIt tools.
If your computer has been behaving itself I'd be inclined to do the normal uninstall and make sure you reboot after doing it.
