Re: Silent Mode does not revert to default settings

Good Morning Everyone,

It is interesting that a "fix" was found for this problem, but I see a fundamental flaw in that approach which I put forth for your consideration.

The whole idea of Silent Mode is to suppress Norton Alerts and background tasks while working on a project; in this case Sea_Monster was converting some video files.

Therefore, even though Sea_Monster was running another program it should not have had any effect on the Silent Mode Timer.

Who would want silent mode to work only when nothing else is running?  What would be the purpose?

This evening I shall test it while doing some video editing in Premiere Pro and report back with the results.

Look forward to your comments.

Re: Silent Mode does not revert to default settings

If I understand the point you are making, it could be considered sensible by Silent Mode that if it is invoked for a period of time to run a process then it would stay on until the process was finished even if that over-ran the time preset?

Perhaps the designers can chip in on this -- I remember testing it out during pre-Beta but only to see if it did stop popups eg while watching a video.

Re: Silent Mode does not revert to default settings

Hi huwyngr,

An interesting point that you make about running overtime, but Sea_Monster noted that a restart was required to revert the Silent Mode back to OFF.  His experience was that the timer did not work even close to as planned.

In my reading of the help section, the timer should not be affected by the program in use and should revert back to OFF once the preset limit from the drop down box is reached.

I agree that input from someone in design would be welcome.

Hi Sea_Monster,

Which Freeware AV Conversion Utility were you using? Can you post a link to it? I want to be sure our team is able to test to see the conflict. Thanks!

Re: Silent Mode does not revert to default settings

Don't forget that there are two reasons that a machine can be in silent mode, the user manually turning it on for a period of time and running a full screen application (if the option is enabled). I suspect that the conversion utility is either running in full screen mode and thereby preventing leaving silent mode, or, that NIS (or was it NAV?) is incorrectly detecting that it is running in full screen mode and thereby preventing leaving silent mode. Once the information that Tony has requested has been provided we can investigate a solution if it is the second case.

Dear All,

Above is the link to the FREE program.

I manually invoke the SILENT ON feature in System Tray as I assumed the NIS2009 will not bother with the ripping process.

As for FULL SCREEN, I am sure that the program is not in FULL SCREEN Mode, but I wanted to make sure that NIS2009 process will not bother the ripping process.

Thank you all for your help again.

P/S :- it could help if NIS2009 icon in system tray..change color when the Silent mode is ON.  Users can tell when to turn it OFF.

Dear All,

One more question.

The Silent mode ON is to prevent processing of any programs within NIS2009.  Is that correct?

I invoked the Silent mode ON to prevent Quick Scan or others from running, I need all process to STOP, so that I can have an

ERROR free ripped.

Thank you.

P/S :- IT COULD HELP IF THE NIS2009 ICON CHANGES COLOR WHEN THE SILENT MODE IS ON.  THIS COULD REALLY HELP.........

Re: Silent Mode does not revert to default settings

FWIW:

Inspired by Reese's mention of Full Screen Detection I performed the following test trying emulate Sea_Monster's issue, but admittedly using a different video program.

6:44:47- I turned ON Silent Mode for a period of one hour.

6:48:48 - Opened Adobe Premiere Pro (video editing program) which is a Full Screen application using approximately 320,700 KB memory.

Throughout the next hour I did some video edits and at 7:40 I initiated the timeline to play the video.

7:48:00 - I exited Adobe Premiere Pro which would have been 4 minutes past the timer setting.

During the last few minutes while using PPro, there was no message that Silent Mode was reverting back to OFF.

I then checked the Recent History.  It showed that Silent Mode turned OFF automatically at 7:44:47. Exactly one hour after it was initiated.

Therefore I conclude that the Silent Mode timer works as described and the timer function is not affected by using a Full Screen application.

Additionally, Full Screen Detection functions as described in the help section as there were no Norton background activities listed in the history until after I exited PPro.

Nice to see these functions work as advertised!
