Strange behavior from laptop after Norton 2012 update??? Freezing, crashing, etc...

Hello,

This is my first post on the forum and until now I haven't had a problem with my computer.  I own a HP DV7-1240US and it came with Norton 09 previously installed. I've since then renewed the product every year. Just recently though, It showed the "little red X" saying my definitions were out of date and that an update was available. Since the update I have had countless problems with crashing and feezing up and could only get the comp to respond by doing a hard re-boot. It took several re-installs of norton 2012 to get the little red X to go away. I now have a green check but still have the problem of my computer freezing, "Host processes failing", "Symantec Structure has stopped working" etc.

Norton is the only anti virus software I've had on this laptop and yes I did use the Norton Power Eraser and it found nothing. Over the years I have seen Norton catch viruses and put them into Quarentine. Is it possible that when deleting and re installing Norton the virus was set loose? I'm somewhat computer savvy but this is a bit too much for me. Any help is will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hello Eric and welcome to the Norton Community!

First, to address your concern about the items in Quarantine, uninstalling and reinstalling Norton would not release any threats back onto your system.  If you wish, any items remaining in Quarantine can be permanently removed by clearing those entries from the Quarantine History.

Since you "jumped" versions from 2009 to 2012, I would recommend a thorough uninstall using specific procedures followed by a new clean installation.  I believe you may still have some remnants of the 2009 product which are causing your issue.

Please let us know if you are using Norton AntiVirus or Norton Internet Security and we will provided explicit instructions for the best reinstall procedure.

Since your computer came with a 2009 Norton version, may I assume that your operating system is XP?

Thanks!
