I have NIS 2010 on my 3 PCs and the subscription is expiring in the middle of August. I just purchased on EBay a 2 year 3 PC license. Do I have to wait for the subscription to expire to get the maximum legnth of subscription extention(until mid August 2012) or can I put the renewal in now and still have the same expiration of mid August 2012?
Also, as Norton comes out with NIS 2011 and NIS 2012 am I entitled to the upgrade?
Thanks for your help.

Hi neil154,
Welcome to the Norton Community. It is easiest to wait until the last day or two of your current subscription before entering a different product key from your Ebay purchase. When you renew directly through Symantec you keep the same product key and your new days would get added on to your existing subscription.
But since you will be using a different product key, your days remaining would get reset when you renew so most people find it better to wait until the last day or two before your current subscription expires before renewing. Just make sure you don't wait until the last minute because you do not want NIS to expire on you.
However if you do renew early and lose any days you can contact Customer Service and they will add back on any days you might have lost.
You also do NOT need to reinstall NIS when you do this. You would simply click on Express Renewal from the main NIS window where you will be able to enter the new product key.
Also please make sure you are up to the latest version from Help & Support > About. You should be at version 17.7.0.12. If you are not, please run Live Update.
Also, I trust that you were careful about who you purchased this from off of Ebay.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes.
Allen

Thanks for the response and the information.
I updated my 3 PCs with the new product keys and then spoke with Norton and they extended the subscription time by the 27 days I had before the renewal. So everything worked the way you said.
I tried going on the Norton web site to add my product key but it did not show up and I did not see any way to add a new product key. Am I missing the way to add it or because I did not buy it directly from Norton I can not add it to the web site.

Hi neil154,
The product key should show up in your Norton account. Did you activate NIS using the new key? Did it request to save this information to your Norton account?
Try clicking on Help & Support > Subscription status. This will communicate with the Symantec server and may resolve the issue. If not you should contact Customer service again and see if they can add it for you.
For reference please see this post from a Symantec employee.
Please let us know how it works out.
Best wishes.

I don't quite understand what happened. I contacted Norton as you suggested and to make a long story short it appears that the product key that I was sent was a bad key. The part I don't understand is that Norton originally helped me with extending the expiration date. Why they did not tell me that at that time is a little puzzling but not really their problem.

HI neil154,
I'm not sure what they did not catch that in the beginning. Sounds like an oversight on their part.
I didn't want to say this before and cause undue concern but I would recommend never to buy software from some place like Ebay. There have been too many similar stories and unfortunately you just don't typically know if the other party is being honest.
You might want to lodge a complaint through Ebay, not sure if it will help but it can't hurt.
What was the final outcome from Customer Service then? Did you lose the subscription days they initially added or what?
I realized also that I missed one of your other questions regarding upgrade to NIS 2011 when it gets released. When you have a current subscription you will always be entitled to a free upgrade to the most recent version. This is true whether you purchase direct from Symantec or through another vendor.
Best wishes and please let us know how it goes.

Norton was very nice to me and even though I purchased an invalid key they extended the current key that I had which expired mid August by another 2 years. You can't ask for better service than that.
I am complaining to the EBay vendor and will also let EBay know about the problem.
Thanks for your help.

Hello neil
Can you change the the solution to the post which gave you the information so that you could get your problem solved? All I did was to ask you to mark the post that gave you the solution. I didn't solve anything. I think you can change the solution to the post that actually solved your problem. Thanks.
