I am running NIS 2012 on an 8-year old desktop with WinXP Pro SP3 and not having the problem you describe, so I don't think it's old hardware related.

To get AutoFix to run, click on Support -Get Support from the main UI.

peterweb, thanks for your reply. ran autofix-states-----attn: failed to fix one item.......internet connectivity-host file cleanup. i checked my host file-just the one entry...127.0etc. everything seems to be working fine. the last two times this has happened, after the microsoft send error message, auto fix does not come on. norton just stops working. turn off, wait few minutes, reboot, everything good. thanks just wondering if this has happened to others.

I have also received Error 8504, 5 with Norton 360 Premier Edition on a Window Vista machine with all system updates installed. I was working fine last week and started failing on me when I changed my backup default set to go to my USB disk drive. Now when I try to start Norton, it goes into Norton Autofix stating "Checking for a fix for his error" with the progress bar rolling. I left this running all day today and nothing has happened. A reboot does not fix the problem. How can I put on a fix if I cannot start Norton to get the next update? I have only had automatic updates go on Norton and Windows. Some feedback on how to fix this problem would be helpful, or I need a full refund on all of my Norton 360 machines. Please advise since no responses are seen on this thread. Thx

i don't know what's going on with norton 2012. the least little thing now brings up 8504 code, service framework not working and this in turn stops norton from working. most time a reboot fixes it but some other threads on this subject state a complete uninstall/reinstall is required. yesterday i was helping a buddy with his computer and just happened to check his nav2012. he hadn't had an update for 7 days. he still had over 100 days but what i was seeing was norton saying his trail period had expired. after clicking run live update, popup window saying i needed to activate, clicked it, now norton shows his 100 days remaining. he was not aware norton had not been working for 7 days. thank heaven i put sandboxie on his machine and convinced him to use it. i ran scans with mbam and updated norton, everything clean.

I haven't had this problem in quite a while (have boot time on aggressive) so I'm going to close this thread. If anybody else (including myself) I'll (or you who have the problem) should start a new thread regarding this problem, Now as long as Live update keeps working We should all be in clover, P.S Be careful of making any changes to Norton 2012's firewall.................Thanks, Gorpy1

Symantec Service Framework has encountered a problem and needs to close
This happened to me today as well. Had to reboot to get NIS2012 back in the task bar. Clicking on the desktop icon wouldn't start it up. I did not receive a NIS popup offering a fixit for this one.
Additionally:
On 13 May 2012 I got the following error which forced a re-boot.NIS did pop up its own fixit suggestion after the re-boot.
Norton Internet Security
19.7.0.9
Error: 8504, 104
Microsoft Windows XP
2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.120411-1615
Norton Autofix Results: 1 item(s)
Installation :: Success
Is Norton PC Checkup considered an add-on? I have it installed, should I uninstall it to see if that clears up further errors?
Situation immediately before both errors: I had opened the NIS2012 gui to check and make sure a particular program had access through the Norton firewall. Its when I clicked on the Norton Settings; Network tab; Smart Firewall; Program Control that both errors occurred.
