I have spent the last 2 hours trying to replace the Trial version of NIS pre-installed on this netbook, with a second download from my existing PC of a full version of the same product, but which has many days still to run.  I think it is in place but, when I check my Norton centre details, I am told that I only have 5 days left.  Now, it might be that in 5 days time the Trial version will be automatically replaced by the Full version - which is showing as being in place - but I cannot be sure.

The last half-hour has been spent trying to get a UK telephone number that I might ring to ACTUALLY TALK TO SOMEONE for reassurance/assistance on this matter.  Every time I get to the page which lists the telephone numbers - I actually see them - the page disappears after 2 seconds, and brings me back to this Forum!  Now, I don't know you guys out there in the ether, but can anyone give me the UK call-centre number and then - maybe - I'll get to use that part of me (that is currently screaming with rage!) to actually talk to someone.  C'mon guys: help a newbie out?!  You were all that way once.

Hi ,

If the installed version is a Trial, you need to manually activate the Norton program. For that sign in to your Norton account www.mynortonaccount.com and get the Product Key.

Then click on " Activate Now " and enter the product key . Then click on " Next " . The installed Norton program will get activated.

Thanks for the telephone number: I'll keep that safe!  Unfortunately, the Trial version was pre-loaded - so no Product Key: the Full version is on my PC at home, and that has had a NIS on that for 2-3 years now, just updated as necessary and paid for by Direct Debit.  That means that a) even if I were at home, I doubt I would be able to find the original CD it came on - with the Key; and b) I downloaded the actual program onto a flash drive for installation whilst away from home, and have only just discovered how (apparently) difficult it is to achieve what should be a simple operation.  But then, I'm only a few weeks away from becoming a "silver surfer" and what I have picked up about computers has been limited by my late exposure to their existence.

In the computer which you have the Norton installed,You can go to Mydocuments->Symantec Folder and you will have the key stored there.

Take the product key and Open the trialware in this computer and activate the same.

If you were in your www.mynortonaccount.com and able to look at both the trial version and the current version, it may be that you just need to click on the current version to get the activation key.

The problem here might be that the user has a trial version of the nis netbook edition on the netbook. He is trying to activate the netbook trial version with the regular  pc version key. This will not work with NIS  2011. I would say that the trial version of the NIS 2011 netbook edition will have to be removed first the standard way and then install the regular NIS 2011 version and then he should be able to just put in his key from the desktop version.

In 2011 versions I don't think the keys are interchangeable. Here is what I would recommend.

1.get product key for pc version from www.mynortonaccount.com

2. download and save to desktop of netbook NIS 2012

3. remove NIS 2011 netbook edition trial version using control panel method and reboot

4.run the install of NIS 2012 . Please remember to run as Admin

5. activate with the key found in norton account for the regular pc. Regular key from NIS 2011 will activate NIS 2012

6 run live update until all updates are received and reboot as asked to and when finished, reboot one more time.
