Unable to view a familiar web site too many redirects

[ Edited ]

Got my brand new laptop 2 days ago...and i now have a Win32:killApp-w [PUP] whatever that means. I just know its bad. Well it came with free Norton. So I realized I downloaded a virus while trying to download Advanced System Care, got it from the wrong place apparently. Whatever so Norton didn't catch anything and today as I"m attmpting to view a familiar site I get an error message saying the site has been redirected too many times. Chat with Norton, get disconnected. Chat with Norton again, they tell me what to do and I do it, download Power eraser and a full system scan with Norton. Done. Still not able to view the site. Chat with Norton yet again, he does the remote control with my computer does a bunch of stuff and then tells me it's not Norton's fault. I did recieve another 30 das of Norton because my wait time was so long. Well now I'm ready to pull out the big guns and I run Avast boot time scan, which is totally free and it caught the above said virus/trojan/whatever you want to call it. Still can't view the site but I'm running Norton once again to see if it can find the now hopefully marked virus. So far nothing. Any help is appreciated!

[Edit] Finished Norton, nothing. rerunning avast boot scan

HI westtxamber:

Could you please let us know the Norton product you have on your new laptop (Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiVirus or Norton 360) as well as the current version from Support | About.  If you have NIS or NAV the latest version is currently 19.2.0.10.

Is your new laptop a HP?  If so and the file detected is c:/hp/bin/endprocess.exe, please see the post here in the Avast forum about a legitimate HP utility that is incorrectly detected as win32-killApp-w when scanned by Avast.  The [PUP] in your detection stands for Potentially Unwanted Program, meaning that the file in question might be unwanted and the user should use their own discretion if permanently deleting this file.  PUPs and PUMs (Potentially Unwanted Modifications) usually turn out to be harmless, and this may not be the reason you are having problems viewing one particular website.

I would suggest installing the free Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) scanner and running a full scan to see if it can find any other malware.  Decline the 15-day trial period of the advanced Pro features of MBAM to ensure that you don't accidently enable the real-time protection mode in MBAM.

Note that having two security software programs installed and running in real-time mode can create conflicts and actually decrease the security of your system.  Once you've decided if you would like to use Norton or Avast as your primary security software let us know and we can provide instructions for wiping the unwanted program off your computer.

Re: Unable to view a familiar web site too many redirects

Imacri: using the 2012 NIS im assuming the latest version. Yes it's an HP and yes thats the file that was detected. MBAM is being installed as we speak, by the avast techhnician remotely. Thanks for the advice about running two antivirus at the same time...did not know that :P Now...which to remove...

bjm_: i had the file moved to chest...now realizing i think i should have selected repair. also the site is www.curse.com...i know it's an ok site...used it tons.

so im going to keep norton i guess since ive got it free for a few months.

so now my question is to Imacri - is that weird HP only issue going to continue to be a problem? i dont really understand from the forum you linked what to do from here XD

thanks to both for the help!

no problems with http://www.curse.com/

2 day old system.  Presuming Win7

Have you created boot/repair disk.

Have you created backup image.

(have you even had time to explore all the preinstalled trial bloatware)

2 days old.  If you were asking for my opinion.  I would get 2 day old system back to factory out of the box.

That said.  Imacri posts have consistently impressed the heck out of me.

So, you're in good hands with Imacri.

Respectfully

Hi westtxamber:

First things first.  The endprocess.exe file is part of the HP Recovery Manager and is responsible for safely stopping open applications when you are trying to perform a system restore or re-install your Windows OS so it's essential that we recover this file from the Avast chest - assuming the Avast technician hasn't done so already.

I've never used Avast but there is an excellent article here in the Avast knowledge base titled Restoring a False Positive From the Virus Chest.  Once the file is restored, check to make sure that you can find it on your hard drive in its original location, which is usually c:/hp/bin/ on most HP laptops (please confirm the correct location on your particluar system).  According to the post by Pondus here in the Avast forum, a copy of the endprocess.exe file will remain in the chest - I would leave the copy in the chest until you are absolutely certain that it's restored properly.

If you have any problems restoring the endprocess.exe file it may be necessary to first prevent Avast from detecting the endprocess.exe as a PUP by creating a scan exclusion for this file as described here in the Avast knowledge base article On-access Protection - File Exclusion.

Once you are certain that you have the endprocess.exe restored to its original local on your hard drive, I would uninstall Avast from your Windows Control Panel (Start | Control Panel | Programs and Features) since you have decided to use NIS 2012 as your security program for now.  I'm not sure what version of Avast you installed, but before uninstalling Avast you may need to disable its self -defense feature first by right-clicking the Avast "A-ball" icon in the system tray, choosing Avast! Shields Control and selecting Disable Permanently.

Uninstalling Avast (as well as security software from other manufacturers) sometimes leaves behind residual registry entries and files on the hard disk that can still interfere with your Norton product, so for good measure I would re-boot your PC after uninstalling Avast and then download run the Avast uninstall utility as instructed here to wipe it off your system.  To start your laptop in Safe Mode (step 2 of the instructions) just re-boot your computer, tap the F8 key every second or so before Windows starts, and then select Safe Mode from the advanced boot options menu.

And worst case scenario - if for any reason you can't restore the endprocess.exe file correctly before uninstalling Avast, you can download a zipped copy here and extract it to your hard drive as long as you know the original location (e.g., c:/hp/bin/).

Let us know if you have any problems with the endprocess.exe restore or Avast uninstall.  NIS 2012 should work fine after all this but if it starts behaving oddly after you remove Avast from your system (e.g., LiveUpdates won't install, high number of false positives detected during a NIS full system scan, etc.) let us know and we can provide step-by-step instructions on how to perform a clean re-install of NIS.

Once Avast is removed from your system check the www.curse.com site and report back if you're still having problems.

Edit:

And thanks to bjm_ for the kind words.  Please jump in any time to help - all opinions and suggestions are greatly appreciated, especially since I'm not an expert when it comes to Avast.

First off, thank you both for your help! No one else is much help. The Norton technician I called last night deleted avast and the file in question. I did some searching and located the downloadable file that is missing. However, there is no folder under HP that is titled BIn. Does this mean I need to make a new folder and title it Bin? The options that are there are as follow:

HP Auto

HP Client Services

HP LaunchBox

LoJack

Recovery

Shared

OK so I'm not doing anything untill I hear back. Thanks again!

[Edit]  Alright I did do one thing, show hidden folders...Bin is still not there.

C:\HP\BIN is a hidden folder.  Be sure you've allowed hidden and also system folders and files to be visible.

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Operating-Systems/Endprocess-exe/td-p/598671

Based solely on my Vista box.

Never looked for BIN on WIN7 box

I find BIN Folder w EndProcess.exe in the BIN folder.

path: Computer > Local Disk(C) > HP > BIN > 28 items (on my system)

I sincerely hope you can find your BIN folder

Have you considered HP Support http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html

In-warranty products receive free phone support.

Do you still have Advanced System Care installed.  Did you run Advanced System Care.

Perhaps it runs on initial install.   :smileysad:
