Unscheduled operation of Norton Antivirus

I have scheduled Norton Antivirus to run a full scan scheduled once every week. However, on more or less a daily basis the antivirus software launches a 'background scan', which causes my PC to slow down. I've checked through the settings and cannot turn off this unscheduled scan. Please advise the how I can fix the problem.

Re: Unscheduled operation of Norton Antivirus

If this is a fresh installation, or if the automatic idle time scans are still enabled, the scan will continue to run until it is complete.  It is stopped each time the system is used, and then begins again during idle time.  If it has never been allowed to complete, it will eventually force a scan while the machine is in use until it completes.  Once it finishes, you will be able to turn off automatic scans and rely on a scheduled scan.  The quick scans will continue to run when new definitions are availble but take only a few seconds.
