Re: Updating NIS 2007 to NIS 2009

For what it's worth, I like SendofJive's reasoning that removing via add/remove first is less likely to disturb Windows.  Things proceed in an expected manner.  Windows errors are a pain.  I also like Dbrisendine's recommendation that if you are going to "brutally" remove it do it in safe mode for the same reason.  Try not to irritate Windows.  It's got to be the buggiest software ever written.

I personally think you will do fine, but I am also sitting on the edge of my chair to hear how it goes.

Best wishes

Lol, there are so many different opinions among the experts themselves...Oh boy...I think I'm going to spend most of tomorrow just reading up on the most preferred method...Maybe it depends what kind of Windows OS one is running? Mine is Vista Home Premium SP1 with all the latest Windows updates. I went to the Symantec German chat (since my other mother tongue is German), and the German Symantec employee was exquisitely rude and made me flex my fingers with rage...but s/he did tell me to simply run the removal tool without prior deinstallation via add/remove programs ("Sie sollen doch gefälligst das Removal Tool laufen lassen!!!" was the phrase, I think...="Just run the removal tool!!!"). Ahem. Sometimes, asking politely doesn't always help. However, I am very happy to see how nice, patient and friendly everyone is over here in this forum.

Yes, just run the NRT.  I think the recommendation that I have most often seen from Symantec is that if you are going to use the Removal Tool, use it directly without uninstalling through Add/Remove Programs.  Honestly it's amazing more people aren't killed every year trying to figure out the best way to upgrade their software.  I would suggest that Symantec publish an official preferred method but somebody would only come along and say "Yeah, but that's not the best way to do it..."

Re: Updating NIS 2007 to NIS 2009

Any idea how long this will take? 1 hour? I guess it depends on the RAM as well, I've got 2 GB. Lol, I could write a whole thesis about the ideal Norton deinstallation procedure, it has turned into an ENORMOUS project for me, I've been researching the topic for more than 1 month so far...Crazy, I know, but I'm a worrywart and a stickler to details. Lethal combination. Anyway, I'll stick to my recipe and hope everything goes well. Thanks again for all your help.

My university's IT department has got even older software than I do on the students' computers...Norton (Corporate version) 2005...I wonder what they get paid for if no one bothers to update the scores of university computers on the campus...?! Maybe they, too, are unsure about the ideal upgrading process ;-D Another sad thing is that those computers are filthier than a public toilet seat. Crumbs, sauce stains, chewing gum on the keyboards and mice...you name it.

Erm...one last question...since I've got Vista with UAC activated...can I leave UAC on during the deinstallation/installation process?

Yes, you can leave Vista UAC as it is. That won't affect your uinstall/install process. During installation, if the Vista UAC prompts, click Continue.

Re: Updating NIS 2007 to NIS 2009

I am currently researching the add/remove programs deinstallation method.

To my displeasure, I see FOUR Symantec/Norton-related entries in my Vista Software panel (equivalent of add/remove programs in XP).

Namely:

-Symantec Technical Support Web Controls (do I have to remove that? It's the component related to the chat support)

-Norton Internet Security (Symantec Corporation)

-LiveUpdate 3.2 (Symantec Corporation)

-LiveUpdate Notice (Symantec Corporation)

So. In which order to I have to kick the above off my computer, and which ones?

PS: The Eurovision song contest is going on. It is terrible.

Re: Updating NIS 2007 to NIS 2009

Moby_Duck,

You can leave the Symantec Technical Support Web Controls.  Uninstall NIS first, then uninstall LiveUpdate and LiveUpdate Notice.  The latter two are no longer stand-alone applications when using NIS 2009, which has LiveUpdate integrated into the main application.  If you try to remove LiveUpdate prior to uninstalling NIS you will get a pop-up advising that a Symantec program that needs LiveUpdate is installed on your computer, do you really want to remove this?
