I have NIS2012 running on my desktop PC with about 188 days remaining on subscription, I have jyst bought a laptop which has NIS2012 installed with a 60 day trial version. My question is if I use my existing product key on the new laptop will that reset the subscription on that to 188 days, and will it automatically update both machines when the yearly subscription is due?

Yes, it will reset the new install on the laptop to 188 days. It will be automatically update both machines when the yearly sub is due - if you have auto renewal enabled. This is all based on your having a remaining license available on your subscription.

newboy,
What Yank says is perfectly correct -- and it's no good waiting for the trial to end because your installed copy is counting down just the same from when it was first installed.
But what would do no harm is to contact Norton's OnLine Customer Support via the CHAT route as below and ask if by any chance they can add the trial period to your paid subscription -- occasionally we have had feedback from users that this has been done, as a courtesy, so it's worth asking.
Are you continuing to use the first PC? Is your NIS 2012 a 3 PC version? If you are discontinuiing the first PC then again it's worth asking CHAT since they can liberate that activation for use again during the balance of the subscription ....
Do let us know how you get on ....
