W7 64bit NIS 2011 compatibility

I resolved my previous problem with NIS 2010 and I would like to change over to NIS 2011 but one of the NIS 2011 links someone here provided said W7 32bit was only compatible not 64bit.  Has this changed recently or should I wait? Thanks

Hi junkfresh,

NIS 2011 is fully compatible with 64 bit Windows. NIS itself is written as 32 bit but it fully supports 64 bit Windows. I run NIS 2011 myself on my 64 bit laptop with no problems at all.

However when it comes to applications like IE, Outlook, etc NIS only supports the 32 bit version currently.

I suspect this will change by the time NIS 2012 comes out. This is my personal opinion and this did not come from Symantec.

So you can feel free to upgrade to NIS 2011 on your 64 bit Windows but if you want full integration with things like IE and Office you should run these as 32 bit.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen

Hi junkfresh,

You are most welcome. :smileyhappy:

Here is the procedure for upgrading to NIS 2011.

As a precaution, if you use Identity Safe you should back up this data first. Please see this link for details on how to do this.

Also as a precaution you can make note of your NIS product key which you can get from your Norton Account.

Please download the full version of NIS 2011 from here. Please note that this is the English version so please let me know if you need a different language and I will provide the appropriate link.

You can install over the top of NIS 2010, provided that 2010 is not having any problems.

Please make sure and run live update after you install NIS 2011 (rebooting as requested) until it reports no more updates are found.

Please let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Allen

Re: W7 64bit NIS 2011 compatibility

Eleborating on what Allen says.  He meant the 32 bit version of IE NOT the 64 bit version, which almost no plugins supports.  To check if you are running the 64 bit version go to help-->about. THe 64 bit version would have the words "64 bit edition" and would have a string of: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; Trident/4.0; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; SLCC2; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; MDDC; Tablet PC 2.0; .NET4.0C; Media Center PC 6.0) (from my PC so yours may differ)

32 bit string: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/4.0; SLCC2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; MDDC; .NET4.0C; Media Center PC 6.0)

These string is taken from: http://www.useragentstring.com/

Re: W7 64bit NIS 2011 compatibility

hi Tywin7,

Where did I say anything about 64 bit IE? I said only 32 bit IE and Office/Outlook are supported.

Best wishes.
