I must have hit the jackpot then as last night NIS 2009 updated itself to .11 on both my Vista machines and then downloaded and installed NIS 2010 over the updates. I didn't have to remove anything whatsoever. It even cleaned up after itself.( on one of them)

Took some time I'll admit but then windows updated about  eight files and had to reboot for that. This Morning all works well so far it all good on both machines.

Windows downloaded more stuff this AM but it took next to no time to handle it. Not sure but I think this version of NIS is much easier on the CPU and memory than anu past versions.

But I think the answer is to be patient as stated.

Hope you all have the same luck that I had.

Thanks for that. Your experience is pretty typical from what I am seeing reported. Symantec have done a good job.

That's great to hear.  I will wait and see if my clients get their updates that easily.  It is unfortunate that this new release hits the same general time as MS updates which can create a bewildering state in terms of reboots/shutdowns, and what the ordinary user will experience.

Re: When Installing NIS2010 Be PATIENT!

I'm also getting these really great numbers on insight now with NIS2010. One machine is stating 96 percent trusted and the other is at 97 percent!

I'm still learning how it's all is put together but it's been a really positive experience so far.  I'm really, really liking this build and it plays very well with PC tools Spyware Doctor AND Firefox 3.5.2.

Anyone else seeing these numbers in insight? Just curious.

Well done Norton/Symantec!

Re: When Installing NIS2010 Be PATIENT!

Thanks Mij

Followed your advice about waiting then seeing the icon being on the System tray and clicking on it brought up the activation process!! All is done and no pain what so ever.

Note I watched the other icon disappear after reboot then reappear then the system tray icon turned up about 5mins,I waited extra to be sure then read about clicking on the tray icon and all is sweet.

thanks again mij for posting your experience.

Cheers Mo

Re: When Installing NIS2010 Be PATIENT!

Hi To All,

Thought I'd update you on my second install re my earlier posts in this thread. My upgrade using the auto process took me nearly three hours to completeyesterday. Today when I upgraded to 2010 on my sons pc next door it took a fraction of the time.

'Mijcar' kindly advised me yesterday that there may have been a hidden page I didn't see and after his explanation (See also his earlier post in this same thread) I decided to close all the pages except the download window. As soon as the 80 odd MB downloaded, the fancy install page appeared and then took about 2 mins to install instead of the marathon I experienced yesterday. I think something should be posted officially about this!

I have given a kudos to you Mijcar for this info, well done mate and thanks for making my second auto upgrade a more pleasant experience. Have a good day all and good luck to anyone else with the upgrade procedure.

When I went from 2009 to 2010 I used Revo Uninstaller to remove 2009. Quick, complete and with no problems.

Why would you bother?  I haven't seen a single report from anyone about removal issues.  Using Revo exposes you to malware during the interval between removal and installation.

Incidentally, using any remover other than the built-in process of Norton also creates potential issues of data and settings transfer from the old product to the new product.  If their was no such problem (that is, if your settings and activation number transferred in), then the Revo uninstallation was incomplete and is therefore reliable.  If the settings and activation number did not transfer, then you are losing valuable information each time you do this.

Re: When Installing NIS2010 Be PATIENT!

My experience too last night on XP Pro / NIS 2009 16....11.

I used the Update Center and it downloaded the Dowqnload Manager and then started the installation procedure but stuck on 80% then 81% for what turned out to be your 5 minutes.

I thought to myself well that's alright it must take time to save all my antispam lists and other settings ....... but blow me it wiped them out and doesn't seem to have any possibility of importing (or saving if I had done so in some way) There is an Import button on Allowances but all it did was bring in my Address Book and no Import button on Exclusions.

So now I will have to go through the whole teaching routine for several years exclusions and acceptances since a lot of store advertising and flyers that I want to receive are classified by Norton as Spam probably becuase of the nature of the source.

I am really p.....'d about this since in the past we have been assured that Update saved the settings and I've said this to people here in the forums.

And since any testing I've done on 2010 has been on a testbed I've not collected any mail on it so no opportunity to learn this during testing. In any case it may be a "feature" of the Update Center since if you do a normal uninstall it asks you do you want to do a Custom uninstall and save settings.

I have not had time to read the rest of the thread yet -- got to go out now.

Re: When Installing NIS2010 Be PATIENT!

[ Edited ]

I'm adding this today to my earlier post here Re: When Installing NIS2010 Be PATIENT!

I don't think I had a hidden screen since as soon as I started the Download Manager running I closed down the screen for the Update Center website that I used as the source of the Update (it was updating NIS 2009 16.7.2.11 if I did not mention that before) and it did go from the Download screen to putting up the Installation screen with the progress bar that stopped at 80% for a while and then nudged to 81% for some 5 minutes and then did complete the installation and pick up the KEY and unexpired time from my Norton Account for non-beta products.

I wouldn't mind it taking that extra time on an update compared with a clean install (apart from it saying "less then a minute remaining" for all that time <8:(>) if it had been saving my antispam settings but .....

I have two active users on this desktop, Dottie and Hugh, but I'd logged off Dottie and was only logged onto Hugh while updating and nevertheless it deleted the settings for both of us.

PS And also note that I had already run Windows Update both when it flagged Tuesday updates and just before installing the NIS update so there should have been no WUD activity while installing.

Re: When Installing NIS2010 Be PATIENT!

Uh, perhaps this is a good place to mention that Symantec is no longer offering "teachable" Antispam.  It gets its antispam rules solely from a database on the internet that it keeps on updating.  Maybe that explains your "lost" settings?
