Why is Download Insight sometimes inconsistent about notifications?

[ Edited ]

Hi:

In reference to NIS 2010...

I have noticed that on some occasions where I download an EXE file to my system, there is no popup from Download Insight informing me of the file's status. The physical area of the screen is not obscured. I then do a right-click context scan just in case.

Any ideas?

Hello Plankton,

Norton Download Insight only addresses downloads using the HTTP protocol..

If you download a file via FTP, there will be no Download Insight notification.

Hi Phil_D:

That is correct.

Problem is that the downloads in question are via HTTP.

Re: Why is Download Insight sometimes inconsistent about notifications?

Hello Plankton,

I noticed the same result on two different machines - no Download Insight notification. There are a few entries in history that statistical information was submitted to Symantec, but it appears to be involved with Community Watch.

I may be missing something here, but perhaps the Symantec Staff can check it and clarify the situation.

Thanks!

Re: Why is Download Insight sometimes inconsistent about notifications?

It depends on the coding of the web page serving up the file for download.  It would be best to submit the location to Symantec staffers to check the differences.

Hi Phil_D and dbrisendine:

Thanks for your assist with this issue!

It has not been the first time that this has happened.

It would be great it if the actual Root Cause could be posted when it is found.

Re: Why is Download Insight sometimes inconsistent about notifications?

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I have entered a bug on this and sent it to the appropriate team.

Here's what I believe is happening:

Download Insight is a two stage inspection process. The first stage inspects the file after download, the second when the file is executed. In this case, for some reason, the download inspection doesn't recognize the file and skips it. However the second stage does recognize the file so it will inspect it. This means that when you launch "app.exe" it will be processed by Download Insight and you will be alerted if the file is not Good.

This particular file is marked as Good so by default you won't see a prompt and the app will be allowed  to execute normally. If you change the setting to always prompt (Web Settings -> Download Insight -> Download Insight Full Report -> Always) you will see this report appear every time.
