Windows 7 64 bit reports no security software with NIS 2011

I have two computers running the Windows 7 64 bit operating system.  Both have been using NIS 2010 with no problem.  I upgraded both to NIS 2011 and now one of them still reports no problem but on the other I get a red flag from the Action Center alerting me that no security software is installed.  The Activity Center on the working machine tells me that NIS reports that it is currently turned on.  Both updates were performed at the same time, using the Check for New Version link under Help and Support on the main program screen of NIS 2010.  Both computers are running the same software from a common 3 user disk.  The settings for the two are identical.  I've tried uninstalling NIS 2011, reinstalling NIS 2010 and then upgrading to NIS 2011 two times, with no change in result.  Both computers report 94 days of subscription remaining so that's not the issue.  At this point, I've gone back to NIS 2010 on the problem machine and will leave it there until there is a solution.  Can anyone help?

Re: Windows 7 64 bit reports no security software with NIS 2011

Try restarting the computer this usually fix the problem.

In the future, I recommend downloading from http://www.norton/nis11 instead of the CD.  This is always the latest version of Norton Internet Security 2011. The CD version may not contain all the patches released and so the LiveUpdate size will be larger

Hi framemaker,

Welcome to the Norton Community. Do you have any other security software installed on the problem computer besides NIS? Had you restarted the computer after installing NIS?

It would appear that the installation on that computer is bad and you will need to use the Norton removal tool to resolve it. Before going through all the steps below please be sure that no other security software is installed on the computer. If there is please uninstall it first through control panel and then use a removal tool provided by that vendor before trying to reinstall NIS.

Here is the procedure for NIS.

If you use Identity Safe you should back up this data first. Please see this link for details on how to do this.

Before you use the removal tool, please download the full version of NIS 2011 from here. Please note that this is the English version so please let me know if you need a different language and I will provide the appropriate link.

Once you have downloaded NIS, you can proceed with use of the removal tool as indicated below.

Please NOTE that this removes ALL Symantec products so be sure to have your license keys ready as you will need to reinstall all your Symantec software products. You can get your Norton product key from your Norton Account.

Once done please download the Norton Removal Tool from Symantec from this link.

For your protection, disconnect from the Internet before continuing.

Do a conventional uninstall of NIS via the Control Panel > Uninstall a program and then restart your computer.

Run the Norton Removal Tool and once it is completed, please reboot your computer. Once up please run the Removal Tool one more time and once again reboot.

Then please install NIS 2011 from the full version downloaded earlier. Once installed please reconnect back to the Internet and run Live Update repeatedly (rebooting as requested) until it reports there are no more updates.

Hope this helps and please let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Allen

{EDIT} Removing the suggestion as the user does not have 2011 version installed now.

The OP mentioned going back to NIS 2010 on the problem computer.

Re: Windows 7 64 bit reports no security software with NIS 2011

Rebooting had no effect but following the uninstall, reboot, run tool, reboot, run tool, reboot, install NIS 2011, live update procedure cleared up the problem.  Thanks!
