Hello
Can anyone tell me why file ccsvchst.exe seems to take up to 50% or more of my laptop's CPU time and retain it for an hour or more from time to time?
Obviously, this is very annoying.
According to the file, I have version 18.5.0.12 which ships with Norton IS 2011.
Thanks
Martin O'shea.

Hi! MartinOShea,
Welcome to the Norton Community!! :)
It is normal for ccsvchst.exe to take up 50% or more of your CPU resources from time to time because this file is responsible for handling operations such as making sure auto updating is performed, background scans for malware, and other background tasks done by NIS 2011. All security programs will have a specific process that will do this; it is done to make sure your computer stays protected.

Hi DBFick, and welcome to the Norton Community.
What it means is that you are now in a position to provide some valuable feedback concerning the impact that this Norton-related 'CPU hogging' issue has on those Norton Internet Security 2011 users who are affected by it.
First up though, please take a look at the screenshot in the following post and compare it to your own 'Norton Tasks' window (Norton main window > Performance > Norton Tasks):
You will need to change the Zoom level in your Norton Tasks window to '1w' (1 week) to properly compare your CPU usage history over the last 3 days against the screenshot shown in the link above. You can find these Zoom level settings next to the CPU and Memory tabs at the top of the Norton Tasks window.
Does your Norton CPU usage history (yellow) look the same as the usage shown in the screenshot above ie a solid, flat yellow band, stuck at 50% in your case, with no Norton CPU usage spikes above 50%? If so, then please post a screenshot of your Norton Tasks window (instructions here).
If you do have the same symptoms described above, then please provide the following additional information about your system:
To the OP, MartinOShea, can you please provide these additional details about your system as well?
Thanks.
