I clicked the "Quarantine" tab, and there are 855 objects in quarantine... do I need to delete these?

Yep, delete the Quarantine objects

Now going from 2008 to 2009, do you have the product code written down so you don't loose it, cos it a good idea to use the Norton Removal Tool  before installing 2009.  Well that is the way I understand it.  You could try installing over the top.

Under the circumstances (a failed installation) the Norton Removal Tool is recommended to make sure no corrupted files remain.

I actually already deleted all the quarantined items... have JUST finished installing NIS 2009!!!
