XP computer died. Replaced with Win 7 computer. Working to get NIS again.

My XP computer died and was replaced with a Windows 7 computer. I had NIS on the XP computer and the subscription had renewed back in Dec. To get NIS reinstalled. I can try to get the NIS install program off the Ghost backup drive (fortunately to have a backup given the timing of the computer dying) and I got the serial number and product key from my norton account. So will that be enough? I realize this is a NIS forum but I also am looking at putting Ghost on the Win 7 machine too. I heard I need Ghost 15 (I have 14) to be compatible with Win 7. I should get Ghost 15 then? Thanks.

That should be enough but I suggest you download your NIS from below since you will then get the most uptodate version:

New NIS 2011: This link is to the USA/CAN version; if you need a different version please say so.

Click on this link -- NIS 2011  This will download a single file of around 90MB which you should save on your hard drive where you can use it again if necessary -- Do not select Run but use Save when asked and remember where you put it!

With WIndows 7 I suggest you right mouse click on the downloaded exe file and select Run as Administrtor since I find it tends to give better results and use it with files I know are trustworthy.

Did your new PC come with any security software pre-installed say as a trial? If so you need to remove it and run a special clean up tool which we can give you directions to download from the related application website. Even if it's Norton it may be a good idea to clean up although if what you have as a trial is the same version as your defunct copy then all you need to do is click on Renew or Subscribe and enter the KEY .....

Let us know about this before you try to install Norton ....

GHOST is dealt with in the Other Norton Products Forum here in the Norton Community so I'd ask about it there.

Re: XP computer died. Replaced with Win 7 computer. Working to get NIS again.

I'll download the NIS 2011 install you linked. I can see that it would be a good idea to get the latest version. I think the version I was running was NIS 2010 at best maybe even a bit older. the US/CAN version will do quite well. I do log into my Windows 7 Home Premium as admin but I will follow your advice. As far as I can tell I am essentially running bare with only whatever Windows 7 protection, such as the Windows firewall, up and running. I am running behind a home router on DSL. I had been putting off reinstalling everything until I could see whether the old computer (motherboard seemed to die, now maybe the PS went bad too) could be raised from the dead (it would be my non-gaming computer). I still intend to try raising the dead but I don't want to stay bare any longer and get things back to normal. I'll go ask about Ghost 15 in the proper forum. Thanks Russell

Sounds like you have it well in hand and should be OK but you know where to find us if you need anything.

Re: XP computer died. Replaced with Win 7 computer. Working to get NIS again.

Thanks, the whole install went pretty smoothly though I forgot about right click and run as administrator. The only momentary hangup was when I typed in the activation code which the install said was invalid. I went back to my norton account and found a button "use this key" which did the trick. No more problem. I did live update which NIS did and everything seems to be just fine. I am glad to have some good protection now. I'll keep you all in mind. The forums have been helpful. Thanks again. Russell
