Re: can you use Web Of Trust and Norton safe web together

GreatNate1312,

Safe Web, AntiPhishing and Identity Safe are three separate functions.  If you disable Safe Web, that would still leave the AntiPhishing and Identity Safe (Cards and Logins) working.  What Phil_D was saying is that he thought that Web Of Trust has their own antiphishing component so you would be best to disable Norton's AntiPhishing component also if you use WOT's antiphishing.

Disabling Safe Web is just having Norton not rate web sites as you surf (in this version of the Safe Web component) .

To disable Safe Web, go to Settings > Identity Settings and then turn Off Safe Web.

Re: can you use Web Of Trust and Norton safe web together

Before deciding to jump to WOT, I would recommend doing some research.

This is directly form the WOT FAQ page describing how they gather information:

"While our primary source of knowledge is ratings from our users, we also take advantage of hundreds of carefully chosen trusted sources, such as listings of phishing sites from PhishTank ."  (Phishing Protection?)

Now, in my opinion Norton Safe Web uses a more sophisticated approach, not mainly relying on user's ratings:

"The Norton Internet Security and Norton Anti Virus products have a feature called Norton Community Watch that sends an automated submission to the Norton Safe Web analysis system when a threat is detected on a user's machine. These submissions are analyzed by the Norton Safe Web system to confirm malicious behavior which is subsequently served up to our users as site ratings. Norton Community Watch currently has millions of users. We receive a large number of unique URL submissions each day and see a significant jump in case of outbreaks. This approach leverages the power of the large Norton community to detect malicious pages.

Thorough analysis of a web page requires the use of different technologies and takes a few minutes. Norton Safe Web uses signature based file scanning, intrusion detection engines, behavioral detection and also install/uninstall analysis in a virtual environment.  Typical real-time solutions offered by other vendors do not perform a thorough analysis of the web page leading to poor coverage of the threat spectrum. Some threats that real-time solutions do not detect are malicious downloads, fake codecs installed from unknown server or domain, web pages with obfuscated java script which do not trigger known signatures.

As described above, we use the millions of members of the Norton Community to detect malicious sites. We also perform targeted crawling based on different heuristics and receive malicious site feeds from external sources."

So, I guess it's up to you as to which system provides the most accurate ratings.

I hope that helps.

Well then I guess McAfee needs to step up too: http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/freesaver.com

The problem that I see in WOT is that it relies heavily upon USER RATINGS. There is the potential for abuse in that type of system.

However the choice is yours.

Re: can you use Web Of Trust and Norton safe web together

GreatNate1312 -

Safe Web was set up to not dictate to the user but to provide information.  Safe Web, at present, will not block you from visiting any website but does warn you immediately of danger.  Future versions may block entry into dangerous web site (drive by downloads, etc.) but that is all we know now.
