I'm running Win XP - SP3. My NIS was just updated to 20.1.1.2. I immediately started getting this error message and clicking either OK or Cancel closed NIS.
I have done the following:
1. Norton RnR couldn't remove so I used Windows Add/Remove.
2. Then ran Norton Removal tool and rebooted.
3. Reinstalled from Norton "My Account" and rebooted.
4. Ran Live Update and downloaded 14 updates.
5. While installing the 14th update, got the same error message.
6. Repeated the first 5 steps - same problem.
Is this a known issue with Win XP?
Thanks for any ideas,
Jim T

It would be interesting to know why NRNR could not remove. There might be a clue there.
No its not a known bug, but I too had issues under Windows XP which eventually got sorted.
I can only suggest uninstall then run NRT, reboot, run NRT a second time, reboot.
Install from vanity version executable.
Advise if it installs and exactly at what point the error msg reappears.
Sorry nobody else has responded.

Thank you for your response. Since my original post I have uninstalled and reinstalled NIS numerous times using different methods and rebooting after each step. . All to no avail. I did discover that when I run Live Update manually I get the error message just as it is installing the last update on the list. It doesn't matter how many updates are on the list. Therefore, I am assuming that it is puking every time it runs Live Update automatically as well. BTW, what is a "vanity version executable"?

I recently had the 'upgrade to the newer version' notification on 2 of my pc's, one running vista, that upgraded fine with no problems, the other one running xp, does exactly as described above, numerous installs, uninstalls, reboots, etc, just will not work for long before it throws up this error.
I have had to disable the internet on this one now as it has no security, thanks for the update!!
So far I have wasted half a day (worktime) pratting around with this apparently quick and easy upgrade, wish I had not bothered with it tbh.

Paul - I'm sorry you are going through the same frustration as I am. But, I'm also glad I'm not the only one. Does anyone know how to rollback to an earlier version that worked with XP?

Hi Jim
Thanks for the reply, regarding a rollback to a version of nis which worked I would use the norton removal tool to get rid of all parts of this upgrade, restart pc, then install the older version from disc (that is if you have a disc with say 2011 on), but be prepared for a very long list of updates!
I am wondering if this upgrade has been fully tested on xp, after all with the imminent release of windows 8 we are 3 versions of windows behind and may be classed as out of date.
One thing I have discovered this afternoon, having used norton removal tool to completely clear any bits and pieces of nis from the pc, restarted, then downloaded and reinstalled the upgrade (there is no option to save to disk anymore), restarted again and all looked good, so set it off doing a scan, after a short time the schst.....thing popped up again, I basically said 'o sod it' and went back to do some work.
The next time I passed it I had a look and although the error was still there, the scan had completed and nis was now green and secure and still working.
So for now I have just dragged the error box down so it sits on the task bar and out of the way.
Best Wishes Paul

Paul - I don't have a disk. NIS was downloaded from the Norton site years ago and updated automatically. It has always worked fine until this last update. Hopefully we will hear something from Norton Support soon.

Jim - yeah that is the biggest downfall of modern day software distribution - no hard copy to revert back to.
I am hoping we might hear from one of the tech guys from symatec before long too, although I have been reading some other posts re the norton framework (the file which is causing us errors), apparently it drives the gui (the norton windows) so there is a possibility that nis is still working but because the gui (graphical user interface) has crashed, we can't see it! I doubt it myself, suppose task manager would confirm it.
This doesn't appear to be a new issue, I have seen the same fault right back to nis 2010, and unfortunately it nearly always seems to be caused by out of date windows components or partialy corrupt windows files, ![]()
I am now updating the problem pc with the latest components from the windows update site to see if that eventually fixes it.

Hi Jim,
My posting in this thread provides a fairly complete outline of the process...

Thanks for the info on downloading NIS 2012. I uninstalled 2013 (again) and downloaded and installed 2012. Went through all the updates and ran a scan. All appears to just fine. Thanks so much for all the help.
