Hi steveblade,

When changing products it is best to uninstall via the Control Panel method first,  reboot and run the Norton Removal Tool and reboot again.

Norton Removal Tool

When that is complete you should be OK to install N360.  Please wait until you have only 1 or 2 days remaining on your current subscription before installing N360 as you will lose any remaining days if you do it early.

Thanks,  Dave.

Re: changing antivirus 2011 to 360

Hey Krusty --  Out of curiosity, can you explain to me why it is "best" to (1) uninstall via Control Panel (2) Reboot (3) Run the Norton Removal Tool (4) Reboot?

If the user is having no problems with their current install, why can't they over-install? When they over-install, it uninstalls anyhow, saving the pertinent details. Or perhaps just use the Norton RNR tool first.

Why should they use uninstall in Control Panel first?

Hi,

I'm not Krusty but,

NIS and 360 are different products. They have different features and reside in different places in your system. Without the control panel uninstall-reboot-run the Norton Removal Tool-reboot sequence it is possible to leave some bits and bytes for the next program to trip over.

The Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool does not allow you to change products. It's purpose is to REinstall a clean up-to-date copy of the program you are currently running.
It is possible to run the Norton Removal Tool and reboot and have a clean enough system that any leftovers will not cause problems. However, if they do cause a problem then the longer process will be necessary to clean up the mess and get you back to proper operation.

Hope this helps. We'll be here when you need us.

The Control Panel uninstall stops all drivers etc.  The Reboot completes the uninstal function as it does for all programs being uninstalled.  The NRT removes any digital debris that may be left behind by the uninstalled program (ensuring a clean install) and a reboot is always required after running the NRT (as with any other uninstall)

If the user is having no problems with their current install, why can't they over-install? When they over-install, it uninstalls anyhow, saving the pertinent details. Or perhaps just use the Norton RNR tool first.

Whenever you change from one security program to another (including from one Norton program (NAV) to another (N 360 in this case), it is recommended to perform a complete removal of the old program (uninstall, run NRT and fresh install) in order to accomplish a clean install of the new program.

The RNR Tool is only for use when you are removing a program (NIS) and reinstallig the latest version of that same program.  It is especially useful when upgrading a system that has no problems - ie, NIS 2011 installed (with no problems) and upgrading to NIS 2012.

Why should they use uninstall in Control Panel first?

I think I covered that above.

It appears  Dave (Krusty) is offline at the present, so I will attempt to answer your questions within you quote.

One thing I forgot to mention.  If you have Norton AntiVirus this may not concern you,  however if you have Norton Internet Security,  please backup your Identity Safe data before you uninstall your current product.  Instructions can be found here  -  https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&do....

Thanks,  Dave.
