In most cases, running LiveUpdate again will download and install the failed update.

Tony--
Yes, so far at least, retrying multiple times DOES eventually yield success. But it is frustrating (and time consuming). Sometimes, one second try does it, and sometimes, it takes several tries. It would be reassuring to know that they know what the problem is, and are working on it (or even that they DON'T know what the problem is, but are trying to find out). But it seems apparent that the problem isn't going to fix itself. Any chance of getting a short status report on where your folks are in trying to resolve this persistent issue?

Hi,
I can't speak for Tony or the company but my experience has been that the real problem is the Internet. Speeds are increasing, pipe size is increasing and the amount of data being pushed through is 'really' increasing. It only takes one bit out of place to corrupt a download. Many times this will not be enough to trigger an error message but it does make the download fail to install.
During times of less activity the next run of live update will usually cure the problem. If there's a lot happening then it may take several trys.
Yes, there are ways to prevent much of this, and yes, they could be implemented, BUT the other side of the coin is the cost in time, effort and resources that it would take to generate almost absolutely secure transmissions with the several million computers worldwide that use Symantec/Norton products. Until it reaches the point that I cannot keep my copy up to date enough to make me feel secure I will live with the minor inconveniences of haveing to rerun live update upon occasion.
That's just me and I'm only one old man. So try to

But the failures are happening for everyone, all connecting to LiveUpate, relayed through different routers to different servers at different times, ![]()

SOJ,
Agreed on all points. And all are connected thru the same web of computers and other hardware. There may be a specific weak point but that is disproven by the fact that it happens to all users in all locations.
If there is nothing wrong with your computer and there is nothing wrong with the Norton server then the only other place for an error is the transmission media. I could be wrong and I really hope someone can prove me wrong. Until then, that's my story and I'm stuck with it.

Hi Dick. I cannot prove or disprove your theory. I am wondering, however, if the problems I am seeing in the 360 forum regarding backup issues may actually point to a server issue. Input most welcome.
Cheers, Dave.

Hi Dave,
My guess would be more toward the timing. The exact location of the breakdown isn't clear to me. Encrypted data must meet some rather strict requirements for acceptance on both ends for the process to work. Overlong delays or a misplaced bit would cause an error. These are guesses on my part since I'm not part of the team doing the work or trying to fix the problem.

Ok. I can live with that....
