Re: it is happening again, Live update

Hi macinwwwv,

I apologize for not replying sooner to the thread; from the silence on the topic for the past few weeks, I was under the impression that this was resolved for people. Clearly from your latest reply, it is not, and for that I'm sorry. To ensure that this is the same issue as below, can you confirm that the updates are failing for Activity Map when running LiveUpdate manually, but coming through when running LiveUpdate subsequent times?

I agree, a workaround is not a solution, and the fact that we have a workaround does not lower the priority (or inconvenience) of the issue. Thanks for letting us know that you're still seeing it.

Is anyone else still seeing this problem? Screenshots are helpful in confirming it's the same one. Thanks.

Re: it is happening again, Live update

Tony--

It's not ALWAYS the Activity Map that fails, but that has been the most frequent one, and in the case of the two that failed yesterday, it was, indeed, the Activity Map that failed.  As I indicated, the first time, I ran the LU again with a couple of minutes between each time, and the 4th time, the update processed.  On the second one, the first time I ran it after it failed, it processed.

Since this is the first instance of this since about Dec 31 (for me, anyway), those are the only two failures I've had since then.  But before that, it was NOT always the Activity Map--in fact, sometimes, it was more than one item.  I remember the Iron Revocation list (whatever that is) failing on more than one occasion, and the Virus Signatures failing (though less frequently).  The one thing that has NEVER failed (at least so far, an for me), are the Pulse Updates.

Re: it is happening again, Live update

Thanks for the update. We're going to be working on it for the next few days -- can you give us an update on it the middle of next week? It's a difficult problem to fix, and it's going to take a bit of time. Let me know if you're able to help us. Thanks again.

Re: it is happening again, Live update

Tony--

I'll be glad to help any way I can.  If I get more failures, I'll make notes on exactly what failed, when, and what was necessary to get the updates to process.  But of course, there were about two weeks without any failures, so never know when one is going to pop up.  In any cas, I'll let you know next Wednesday or Thursday, whether there have been any more failures or not.

I also have a slight non sequitor - I think I have another virus, trojan, worm w/e. I believe I have a double click virus that cause my mouse to double click when clicked once. Ive seen this before but am having trouble removing it and have tried Malwarebytes with zero success. Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

Re: it is happening again, Live update

Hello

For me it happened on Jan. 4 and Jan 9. But the updates eventually did come thru.  All the other updates were fine whether done manually or by automatic live update.. Considering how many times a day, automatic live update runs a day and how many times a day, you choose to run it manually, it doesn't seem to be a bad record.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view.

Tony--

You asked that I let you know about the middle of this week whether or not there had been any more Live Update failures, and if so, what the details were.

First, let me tell you about my configuration.  I have two computer, one running Windows 7 Ultimate 64, and the other an older Gateway running Windows XP, SP3.  The Windows 7 computer has Norton Internet Security installed.  The Windows XP computer has only Norton Antivirus installed.  Although I have had Live Update failures on both machines (usually, around the same times), I've had more on the Windows 7 machine.  That may be simply a function of the fact that I normally update the Windows 7 machine 3 or 4 times a day, but normally only update the Windows XP machine once a day.  Or it may be that the updates for NAV alone are failing less frequently than the updates for NIS.  But there HAVE been failures on both machines, so the Windows XP machine is not immune to Live Update failures.

All that said, I experienced another failure on Jan 17 at 8:03 PM EST.  At that time, I ran Live Update on the Windows 7 system, and it downloaded 6 items, as follows:

Norton 2011 Iron Revocation List  -- Success
Norton 2011 Virus Definitions X64  --Failure
Norton Activity Map Data  -- Success
Norton 2011 Anti Spam Definitions -- Success
Norton 2011 Web Protection Definitions -- Success
Norton Pulse Update -- Success

I tried again at 8:07 PM EST.  Got no new updates, but the Norton 2011 Virus Definitions X64 still failed

I tried again at 8:20 PM EST, and got two updates, both of which succeeded--Norton 2011 Virus Definitions X64, and Norton Pulse Update.

Later in the evening, at 9:34 PM EST, I ran Live Update on the Windows XP system, and it downloaded and installed successfully, 7 updates as follows:

Norton 2011 IPS Definitions
Norton 2011 Iron Whitelist
Norton Activity Map Data
Norton Safe Web Statistics
Norton 2011 Virus Definitions
Norton Pulse Update
Norton 2011 Iron Revocation List

This morning, I ran Live Update again on the Windows 7 system, and it completed successfully without any failures.

Hope that this information is useful to you.  If I can provide any additional information that might be helpful, please let me know
