HI riracer,
Welcome to the Norton Community. What version of NIS do you have from Help & Support > About? What OS and SP do you have and is it 32 or 64 bit?
When did you install NIS? What other security (anti-virus, etc) did you have before this and how did you remove it before installing NIS? Did you use a removal tool supplied by the vendor of the previous security software? Any time you change security products it is highly recommended to use a special removal tool to remove the old software before attempting to install the new software. This is because software of this type integrates into your OS very tightly and there is a good chance that a typical uninstall could leave things behind which could cause problems with your new software.
Also, NIS 2011 has been out for a while so in working on this we should get you up to the latest.
Best wishes.

Hello riracer,
In addition to to advice given above:
• Have you Run Live Update to get the most recent definitions?
• Have you restarted your computer since installing NIS 2010?
Norton 360 • Norton Internet Security • Norton Zone | XP SP3 • Windows 7 Professional SP1 x64
• PLEASE, BACKUP or EXPORT your Identity Safe Data on a regular basis •

Hello riracer
Which Office edition are you referring to?
Success always occurs in private and failure in full view.

Had Norton 2009. Windows XP professional.
Uninstalled old Norton fully before adding new one. Never had Norton take over before!
Just uninstalled 2010 so I could do some work!

Hi riracer,
There were a few other questions.
1. What SP do you have on XP?
2. What happens when you try to open Microsoft files? Do you get an error message or what? What precisely do you see?
3. Did you run Live Update after installing NIS? Did you restart after running Live Update? What is your exact version of from Help & Support > About?
4. What Office version do you have and is it 32 or 64 bit?
5. You mention having Norton 2009 before. Any other security software such as anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc?
Added questions:
1. Do you have any other problems with your computer besides this?
2. Was everything working OK while on Norton 2009? Did you have NIS 2009 or NAV 2009 before this?
3. How did you do the upgrade to NIS 2010? Did you uninstall 2009 first or did you let NIS 2010 do the uninstall for you? Did you run the Norton removal tool?
Feel free to attach an image of the error you get when you attempt to open Office files. You can do this by hitting Alt + Print Screen combination on your keyboard with the window showing the error message or whatever being the active window. Then bring up MS Paint and hit Ctrl + V to paste the image. Then save to your desktop as a JPG file. You can attach to your post by clicking on the
symbol at the top of your reply editor.
Thanks and best wishes.
