license for 1 PC or 3?

I have just bought a new PC and was looking to download a Norton Internet Security copy which I thougt I was entitled too...I thought I had previously bought Norton Internet Security for 3 PCs. But my subscription page says I've only registered for 1. Is it possible to "lose" PC entitlements if they're not used after a certain time?

If it helps give a clue to what I actually bought, I paid (Australian) $99.99 for NIS 2009 in March 2009, and then $79.99 for NIS 2010 in March 2010. I can find no record of how many PCs I was licensed to, in my confirmation emails.

Hi methenerd,

No, PC licences are not lost if the product key is not activated immediately. They are, to my knowledge, permanent.

Looking at the Australian Norton Store page over here, I can see that $99.99 is charged for NIS 2011 3 PC; there, is unfortunately, no NIS 1 PC version listed, but seeing that $59.99 is charged for NAV 2011 1 PC, NIS 1 PC is probably in between these two prices. On the other hand, I saw that the upgrade version of NIS 2011 for 3 PCs is being sold for $79.99...

What may have happened is that you purchased NIS 2009 for 3 PC but then bought NIS 2010 1 PC afterwards. If you had only one PC during this time and renewed your subscription with the NIS 2010 product key, then your licence would have been (perhaps silently) changed from 3 PC to 1 PC.

In addition, if you have a current subscription, then you can upgrade to NIS 2011 for free via the Norton Update Center (all customers of Norton 2006 products and later versions can profit from this free upgrade):

http://updatecenter.norton.com/

You can find more information on upgrading your product over here:

http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=Announcements&thread.id=12

In order to confirm that your current subscription is indeed for 1 PC,  I suggest that you contact Symantec Customer Service at the link below (for Australia); you can chat with them for free:

Please tell us how it goes - thanks :-)

Re: license for 1 PC or 3?

Before this week I had 2 PCs. The kids' PC (always running Windows, with NIS and OnlineFamily) and my PC, which usually runs Linux (so doesn't use Norton in that case) but occasionally running Windows, with NIS and OnlineFamily. It is possible that I renewed for 1 PC, but unlikely, because the kids still have (Windows) accounts on my PC and I don't want them browsing unsafely.

I just rebooted and had a look at my PC in Windows: it does indeed still have NIS and OnlineFamily running. Both PCs say I have 87 days' subscription remaining and in NIS's "Help About" both give the same 12 Character serial number.

I contacted the Symantec chat service you recommended. They gave me a new download, but I haven't installed it on the new PC yet. (Too late at night now, because it involves removing McAfee AV which came with the PC). I'm not sure if that means he decided I was entitled to 3 PC protection, or I got the free executable and there's still a later subscription step I need to run.

Hi methenerd,

It looks like you have a 3 PC licence in that case. I'm not sure if by checking your subscription page you meant that you logged into your Norton Account (where the licence type is indicated) to look up information on your Norton product:

http://www.mynortonaccount.com/

If you are going to remove McAfee, then don't forget to use the McAfee Removal Tool (you can find the tool and the instructions over here):

Re: license for 1 PC or 3?

Everything seems to have worked. I uninstalled McAfee, then cleaned up McAfee with their removal tool, then installed the NIS (Norton Internet Security) 2011 which chat support directed me to (though that was just the free download anyway). That was the 15 day trial version, but then it let me register it with my registration key, so now I've got 87 days left on all 3 PCs.

Interestingly mynortonaccount.com STILL says I've only got NIS registered for one PC, but since it's let me register it on 3 different PCs I'm not complaining, except that it's a bit misleading.

If it's still like that after Christmas and after checking Subscrption Status again I'd be inclined to chec k again with Customer Support Chat in case something crops up later and is more difficult to untangle ....
