does anyone know why the icon appears like this sometimes in NIS 2010? images attached.
It usually looks like this

Hello bono1 and welcome!
Your images have not been approved yet, but if you are referring to this systray icon then it means that NIS 2010 is in Silent Mode.
If you did not manually invoke Silent Mode, then it may be due to you running a full screen application which will automatically place NIS 2010 in Silent Mode.
From the help section:
"When you turn on the Full Screen Detection option, Norton Internet Security automatically detects the applications that you run in full-screen mode and enables Silent Mode.
Norton Internet Security also detects Media Center Extender session as an active full-screen application and turns on Silent Mode.
When Silent Mode is enabled, Norton Internet Security suppresses most of the alerts and suspends the background activities. Only those activities that protect your computer from viruses and other security threats are run. The activities that are suspended run after you finish using an application in full-screen mode."
