old defs stick around sometime - NAV 2009

Hi,

Running NAV 2009 - all seems fine - updates frequent

However, normally after a full update I have one set of definitions in the VirDefs folder called something like 20081030.003

Occasionally there is still an old set sat in the folder, when this happens I see a reference to APP_ID_AVORPHAN in usage.dat

Here is the conents of that file

[20081028.024]
APP_ID_AVORPHAN_1=1
[20081030.003]
APP_ID_AVORPHAN_0=1
APP_ID_SCANNERW=1
SRTSP=1
AVDEFMGR=1

Where 20081028.024 is the old def folder still in the virusdefs folder

Anyone able to explain what is happening ?

Thank You

Norton keeps a cache of virus definitions. In version 2008 and earlier, running "luall" would present you an option to empty the cache of definitions. However, in 2009, LiveUpdate has been redesigned. I do not believe there is an option to remove the virus defs cache.

Re: old defs stick around sometime - NAV 2009

I now have 3 sets od definitions

 usage.date reads

[20081028.024]
APP_ID_AVORPHAN_1=1
[20081030.003]
APP_ID_AVORPHAN_0=1
[20081030.049]
APP_ID_SCANNERW=1
SRTSP=1
AVDEFMGR=1

Could someone else post their usage.dat to see if it's the same or a problem with this PC ?

Thanks

Re: old defs stick around sometime - NAV 2009

This is not an issue. Whenever your Norton product downloads and installs the virus definitions, which will be stored in your computer. The name of each folder is the date on which the virus definitions are downloaded and installed. For eg: 20081028.024 means these are the virus definitions of 28th October 2008. You can delete these folders after turning off the Norton Product Tamper Protection. But deleting these folders will cause Autoprotect errors such as 3035,2. So please do not try to delete them. These are essential for your Norton product to work properly. No need to worry about them. If the virus definition folders consume a lot of memory space at a later stage, you can delete the older folders by turning off the Tamper Protection, but make sure that you are keeping the latest date alive there.

Hi Alphanet,

If you reboot do these definitions get removed?

Thanks,

Wes

Hi wesleyj,

Reboot doesn't remove them. This is a laptop so gets turned off most nights.

[20081028.024]
APP_ID_AVORPHAN_1=1
[20081030.003]
APP_ID_AVORPHAN_0=1
[20081102.004]
APP_ID_SCANNERW=1
SRTSP=1
AVDEFMGR=1

Re: old defs stick around sometime - NAV 2009

Thanks Alphanet.  Generally when this happens the extra definition sets will be removed after a reboot.  We have identified that there is a problem where they can be left behind and will be issuing a fix in a future release.  The extra definition sets won't cause any functional problems with the product.  If you do need the extra disk space right now you can disable tamper protection and manually remove the [20081028.024] and [20081030.003] definition sets.

Re: old defs stick around sometime - NAV 2009

 Thanks for the reply wesleyj,

Will the fix be issued via automatic live update or will there be a need for a manual upgrade ?

Thank you

Hello Alphanet,

The fix will be applied via an automatic live update, you will not need to manually upgrade the product.

Thank You,

Wes
